The 2025 Screen Guild Actors Awards nominations were announced on Jan. 8, 2025, and while we’re all cheering about Wicked getting nominated for five awards, I want to talk about one particularly compelling category.

Not one, not two, not three but five amazing actresses were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. That’s Jean Smart for playing wise Deborah Vance on Hacks, Liza Colón-Zayas and Ayo Edebiri for their clever foodie The Bear characters, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, and Kristen Bell (who is also hosting!) for starring alongside the extremely attractive Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This (aka one of my favorite shows of 2024).

Come on! How is anyone supposed to pick just one winner? Let’s break down how incredible these actresses are when it comes to portraying their layered characters. Smart is almost too perfect as an older comedian who has to deal with sexism and ageism in Hollywood. Colón-Zayas stole my heart even more in The Bear season 3, episode 6, “Napkins,” when fans learned about the dark time when she was unemployed and finally found work and family at The Beef. And Edebiri has been knocking it out of the park in every single episode as the vulnerable and smart Sydney, who tries to find her voice while dealing with Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) ego and issues (sorry but it’s true).

Brunson not only plays Janine Teagues, one of the best teachers on TV, but she also created Abbott Elementary and is therefore the reason why one of the smartest and loveliest sitcoms exists. Finally, there’s Bell, who lends her pitch-perfect comedic timing to Nobody Wants This as a podcaster who has never opened herself up to true love… until now. But, you know, Brody’s adorable face (and that beard) would make anyone fall in love, so who can blame her?

Every time I try to pick which TV comedy star should win, I get even more frustrated that five awards can’t be handed out. These stars aren’t only skilled actors who have honed their craft for years but good people, too. For example, Brunson has such a kind-hearted approach to making Abbott Elementary and thinks about the people who work on the show as well as the storylines. She told Elle Magazine, “I’m responsible for the employment of many, many people.” She also mentioned “the importance of continuing to open doors for newcomers, who have more room and freedom because of the work that was put in by the people before them.”

If I had to guess, my money would be on Brunson, Edebiri, or Colón-Zayas winning the SAG. Abbott Elementary and The Bear are the two most popular sitcoms in the category, and as much as I loved watching Bell in Nobody Wants This, her performance wasn’t quite as complex as the others’. Sure, one could possibly argue that The Bear has been an awards show darling for far too long and that other shows and actors need to be recognized. But when a show is that wonderful, can anyone really argue with all the accolades?

All I can say is I’m glad I’m not a SAG voter because I would petition the people in charge to let five incredible actresses take home the trophy. I’m almost too excited to watch Bell host the SAG Awards on Feb. 23, 2025 and see who is victorious.

Our favorite foodie show has the most Golden Globes TV noms, but chef Carmy will have to battle another dreamy star to win https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/our-favorite-foodie-show-has-the-most-golden-globes-tv-noms-but-chef-carmy-will-have-to-battle-another-dreamy-star-to-win/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/our-favorite-foodie-show-has-the-most-golden-globes-tv-noms-but-chef-carmy-will-have-to-battle-another-dreamy-star-to-win/#respond Mon, 09 Dec 2024 15:34:18 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1806990 Don't make me choose!]]>

The Bear is the definition of an awards darling. It’s got guest stars like Jamie Lee Curtis (enough said), talented cast who flawlessly play their complex characters, and is an impressive production. So it’s no wonder the Hulu/FX series has been nominated for 5 2025 Golden Globes, the most of any TV series.

Even though The Bear might not be a comedy in some people’s eyes, my all-time favorite series is nominated for Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy. It might seem like an automatic victory, but The Bear‘s hopes for a five-star review might be dashed by another hit show starring yet another heartthrob.

Yup, The Bear and Netflix‘s Nobody Wants This are going up against each other. The other noms include Only Murders in the Building, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and The Gentlemen. These are all solid and well-deserving shows, but I want to talk about how TV fans have been totally blessed by two hilarious and clever shows starring the overwhelmingly handsome Jeremy Allen White and Adam Brody. How are Golden Globes voters supposed to choose? Wouldn’t they just get distracted by Carmy and Noah?

Jeremy Allen White as Carmy in The Bear

Is this a fair fight? The Bear is three seasons in and already has more than a handful of awards. The show won 11 2024 Emmys and, so far, has won 4 Golden Globes out of 12 nominations. In 2024, it took home the Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy award, so it looks like this is Carmy’s race to win. But in my heart of hearts, Nobody Wants This deserves this statute. Thanks to the absolute avalanche of content these days, it takes a lot to stand out in a sea of streaming series.

Sure, a lot of people tuned in for Brody and his fantastic beard, and that was a reason to keep watching. But Nobody Wants This is a sweet but not sappy love story that also touches on vulnerability, religion, family, and big career choices. If only every show could give you Seth Cohen and intelligent, snappy dialogue.

I wouldn’t give The Bear season 3 a Michelin star because, unlike the previous two seasons, there was not enough plot in each episode. But the show’s continued award show recognition begs the question of whether a new, creative idea should beat a fan favorite. Many would argue that award shows become boring examples of fan service and Hollywood clout when the same TV shows or movies win each year.

Maybe this can be the first year that two shows are given an award? Okay, that might be wishful thinking, like hoping that Carmy can finally apologize to Claire (Molly Gordon) and stop being so stubborn. On that note, Nobody Wants This should win because Noah knows how to talk about his feelings and that makes him particularly attractive. Still, it’s hard not to want everyone involved with both productions to be rewarded for their artistry and hard work.

Whether or not they binge-watched Nobody Wants This (and I hope they did), The Bear fans are excited about the Golden Globes nominations. One X said this news made a Monday morning much better.

The 82nd Golden Globes will air Sunday Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. E.T. I’ll be tuning in and crossing my fingers that either White or Brody takes home the award. At least fans can bask in the comfort of knowing that no matter what happens, both The Bear and Nobody Wants This will be back for another season.

An Ayo Edebiri interview has led people to believe she has a daughter. The internet was ablaze earlier this week when one of its newest darlings, Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri – who is fond of joking with fans online, particularly via Letterboxd – seemingly revealed a big surprise about her personal life in a newly-released interview.

The Bottoms actress is the latest cover star for Citizen Magazine, and an online version of Edebiri’s interview with the publication seemingly revealed that she has a two-year-old daughter. For fans of the 29-year-old, this ission came as an incredible shock.

Image via FX

In a conversation with interviewer Yaa Gyasi, an exchange about family, adolescence, and the elderly stood out immediately for many followers of the actress and comedian.

“My mom was a CNA [Certified Nursing Assistant] so she got me my first job as a waitress in a retirement home. So I spent most of my days with elderly people who are like coming down for their dinners at five o’clock. I got so close to some of them,” the magazine’s online version of the interview read.

“And now that I have a kid — I haven’t mentioned that yet, I have a daughter who’s turning two — I’m so obsessed with the idea of her having those intergenerational relationships in her life.”

The interview instantly begged the question: how could someone who has been the subject such public interest in recent years — thanks in part to the hit TV series The Bear and long-running memes about Edebiri being Irish — have a secret family?

Immediately, something wasn’t adding up.

So, does Ayo Edebiri have a daughter or not?

Photo by Patti Perret/ORION Pictures Inc.

As of October 2024, Ayo Edebiri does not have any children. The mistake arose from an issue with spacing and font of the article, where questions from the interviewer were difficult to differentiate from Edebiri’s answers. This made it tricky for some readers to decipher when Ayo had finished speaking and when Gyasi was offering an insight into her own experiences during the exchange.

This was actually confirmed later on in the interview by Edebiri, who says “I’m an only child, and so I’m always like, well, I guess if I have a kid they’ll have to have found family.” The instructive words here are “if I have a kid,” so all those who were sent into a tailspin of confusion can rest assured.

Edebiri is not the first victim of interview formatting issues spreading misinformation. In October of last year, an online frenzy began after fans of singer/actress Halle Bailey seemed to reveal she was married with two children in an interview with Glamour.

Although Halle and partner did welcome a son after keeping the pregnancy under wraps, this was not a quote from Bailey at all.

Rather, Glamour’s digital edition accidentally included questions from former Little Mix member Leigh-Anne Pinnock, who gave the same, word-for-word answer about her husband and twin daughters. The two interviews were accidentally emerged in the digital edition, giving the impression of one consistent interview.

If these corrections spread as quickly as fan freak-outs, there wouldn’t be all these celebrity mothers who aren’t actually mothers at all. In saying that, Edebiri is mother, just not the kind with children.

Complain all you want about it not being a comedy series (even though its levity is precisely the reason it can leverage its drama so well), but the power of The Bear is completely and utterly undeniable. Indeed, never before have the denizens of FX been so in touch with the symbiotic organism of kitchen life and eldritch anxiety, and they never will be again.

Its reach has been so mighty, in fact, that it’s opened up a lot of creative opportunities for stories about kitchens, chefs, and the terrible things that they both endure and enable. Not all of them can claim to be successful, but House of Spoils very much can.

Per FlixPatrol, the Amazon-original, Blumhouse-produced supernatural horror film has soared to number two on the Prime Video film charts in the United States on this day of Oct. 4, and it’s earned every hour. The film stars Ariana DeBose as a chef known only to us as Chef, who goes all in on an opportunity to be a head chef at a remote, yet-to-open restaurant. She quickly falls in love with the natural ingredients that the building’s garden area provides, but in order to navigate this brave new culinary world, she’ll have to contend with the spirit of a witch who takes a none-too-subtle interest in the chef’s presence.

It’s a tremendous exercise on the relationship between elitism and its subsequent ability to disconnect us from nature. DeBose’s chef demonstrates Carmy-coded talent in the realm of fine dining, capable of transforming the most humdrum ingredients into a pretty remarkable feast (deconstructed Caesar salad, anyone?). Nevertheless, she remains unsatisfied until she happens upon the nutritional/medicinal power of the weeds and herbs and bugs that have nourished mankind long before the misguided advent of foie gras.

But in order to fully appreciate what these ingredients represent, the chef must take an enormous step outside of the high-end comfort zone she worked so hard to build for herself, and instead point that tenacity towards her spiritual return to the Earth. She can’t just co-opt the dietary comforts of the old ways; she must embrace the old ways in their entirety.

Indeed, don’t let the 55 percent critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes fool you; if you’re wise enough to not evaluate it by its lackluster scares, it’s a rewarding watch indeed.

Fourth-place Challengers might have you believe otherwise, though. Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama previously held the space that House of Spoils now occupies, but this will ittedly hardly be a setback in the grand scheme of things. The trifecta of Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor in the leading roles are just one of many boons harbored by the tennis-centric masterclass, which will almost certainly go on to be an awards season contender. House of Spoils, for all its worth, will reach no such height.

So while Challengers‘ time in the streaming sun may have been dumped onto a very deserving House of Spoils, its distinction as a heavy favorite for soundtrack awards and a strong contender for screenplay recognition is sure to soften that blow quite a bit. All this, while the esoteric subtleties of DeBose’s latest feature film are given the chance to flourish. It’s a great day over at the Prime Video charts.

Who is ‘The Bear’ star Molly Gordon’s boyfriend? https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/who-is-molly-gordons-boyfriend/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/who-is-molly-gordons-boyfriend/#respond Fri, 27 Sep 2024 09:10:15 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1759810 Life imitates art as we witness the start of a fling between one of our favorite on-screen couples.]]>

Molly Gordon, the rising star known for her role in The Bear, has been making waves in Hollywood not just for her on-screen performances, but also for her off-screen romances. While the 27-year-old actress has been linked to a few notable names in the entertainment industry, her current relationship status has recently become a hot topic of discussion.

For years, Gordon has apparently been in a relationship with Nick Lieberman. The pair had been dating since 2019, collaborating both professionally, as they co-directed the comedy Theater Camp together as an homage to their own past as drama nerds.

However, recent developments have thrown Gordon’s love life into the spotlight once again. Jeremy Allen White, her co-star from The Bear, was spotted in a ionate embrace with Gordon on Sept. 26. Naturaly, this public display of affection has sparked rumors about a potential real-life romance that mirrors the show.

The timing of this sighting is particularly interesting, given White’s recent relationship history. He was previously linked to Spanish singer Rosalía, with whom he was last seen in public in July 2024. White and Rosalía’s relationship had been the subject of much media attention, making his apparent new romance with Gordon even more intriguing.

Gordon’s role as Claire in the show has been pivotal, not just for her career, but also for the development of White’s character, Carmy. In the show, Claire represents a stark contrast to Carmy’s troubled past, offering him a chance at a healthier relationship. This on-screen chemistry seems to have potentially spilled over into real life.

Before his PDA-filled outing with Molly Gordon, speculation was rampant about a potential romance between White and another co-star, Ayo Edebiri. Fans took to social media in droves to discuss a video of the pair at a Chicago Cubs game that went viral, showing White affectionately rubbing Edebiri’s back.

While White and Edebiri never directly addressed these rumors, they both emphasized their mutual respect and acting chemistry. In a Vanity Fair profile, White gushed about his connection with Edebiri both on and off camera, praising her artistic abilities and how she enhances his performance as Carmy.

Until now, Gordon’s personal life has been relatively private compared to her professional achievements. She’s been making significant strides in her career, from her breakout roles in Booksmart and Shiva Baby to her recent directorial debut with Theater Camp. Her ability to juggle multiple projects, including filming The Bear while editing Theater Camp,” speaks to her dedication to her craft.

The entertainment industry is no stranger to on-set romances, and if the rumors about Gordon and White are true, they would a long list of couples who found love while working together. However, as neither Gordon nor White has publicly confirmed their relationship status, we’re all still waiting on the sidelines to see whether the internet’s unofficial boyfriend is off the market again.

Did Jeremy Allen White do Rosalía dirty? His shocking kiss with a ‘Bear’ costar, explained https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/news/did-jeremy-allen-white-do-rosalia-dirty-his-shocking-kiss-with-the-bear-co-star-explained/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/news/did-jeremy-allen-white-do-rosalia-dirty-his-shocking-kiss-with-the-bear-co-star-explained/#respond Thu, 26 Sep 2024 22:38:16 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1759584 Isn't that just a little bit shameless?]]>

You know what they say: the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. That applies even on television, because Jeremy Allen White’s role as chef Carmy on The Bear has made millions of fans fall in love with him. His skills have impressed not just the entire world, but also his co-star —much to the detriment of his girlfriend, Rosalía. Or is she still his girlfriend, after all?

And which costar was he kissing? Although a part of The Bear fandom loves Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri’s characters Carmy and Sydney together, in real life, the actor is going for the same choice as his character — Molly Gordon, who plays Claire.

The two co-stars sparked dating rumors as they were spotted kissing, which came as a major shock to everyone. Paparazzi caught the two hanging out in Los Angeles, and, at one point, Gordon wrapped her arms around Jeremy’s neck, and the chef kissed her. According to TMZ, there were no production company cameras around, which means this wasn’t shot for a scene for the season 4 of The Bear. Instead, it looks like Carmy’s realization that he’s madly in love with Claire transcended the small screen, as it often does, and Allen White has realized he has feelings for Gordon, too. Obviously, fans were shocked, and many had no idea what was going on.

The actor’s personal life has been affected by his stardom, as well, following his success for The Bear. He was married to actress Addison Timlin between 2019 and 2023, with whom he shares two daughters, born in October 2018 and December 2020. Since late 2023, the Shameless actor has been dating Spanish singer Rosalía, but it looks like that’s over. However, Jeremy and Molly’s kiss happened on a special occasion: the two were photographed together on Sept. 25, Rosalía’s birthday.

So far, there has been no confirmation of Jeremy Allen White and Molly Gordon’s relationship — or fling — but he appears to confirm that his relationship with Rosalía is officially over.

The two haven’t been spotted together since July this year, and Rosalía just celebrated her birthday in Paris with a star-studded party. The actor didn’t attend the event, but a plethora of high-profile models and other celebrities were there. Gigi Hadid, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Irina Shayk, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jordyn Woods, Bad Gyal, Willow Smith, and more helped her celebrate her birthday. The fact that Paris Fashion Week is currently going on also helped her curate this star-studded guest list.

Neither Allen White nor Rosalía publicly addressed their relationship, and, since they were last been spotted together in July, the breakup might’ve happened a while ago. However, the timing is a bit shady, because who other than Carmy would make a bigger mess of a normal situation? The Bear is certainly teaching Allen White more than cooking, as per his recent fraternization with his co-star Molly Gordon. Low-key, I’m here for it, though, as long as it leads to Carmy and Claire getting back together.

Over the past three years, The Bear has given us so much: incredible writing, brilliant acting, and a shared sense of anxiety among fans. But perhaps the most commendable gift has been the remarkable cast we’ve had the pleasure of meeting — especially Liza Colón-Zayas.

ittedly, the entire cast has been an absolute delight to watch as they blossom in the television world — and win their much-deserved awards in the process. But there’s something about Colón-Zayas that warms our hearts, especially considering that her breakthrough role, which introduced her to the world of accolades, was The Bear, where she portrays one of television’s best modern characters: Tina Marrero.

The more we see her on screen, the more we notice that, in addition to her incredible talent, she appears smaller than most of her co-stars. So, let’s take a look at her height.

How tall is Liza Colón-Zayas?

Liza Colón-Zayas as Tina in The Bear
Photo via FX/Hulu

Liza Colón-Zayas stands at 5’3″ (1.63m), which makes her taller than some of the petite stars we’ve seen in entertainment, but still relatively small compared to some of her co-stars. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Richie, is 6’1″, while Ayo Edebiri and Abby Elliott, the other two women in the main cast, are 5’6″ and 5’7″, respectively. Our main lead, Jeremy Allen White, stands at 5’7″, making him the shortest male in the cast, though still noticeably taller than Colón-Zayas.

In fact, while she may appear smaller than most people whom she shares a screen with, Colón-Zayas is quite average in height. According to Healthline, the average height for women in the United States is about 5’4″, meaning the Bronx-born actress is only an inch shorter than the national average. Part of the reason for her stature may also be linked to her ancestry.

Although born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Colón-Zayas is of Puerto Rican descent. In Puerto Rico, the average height for women is slightly shorter than in the U.S., with WorldMetrics reporting it to be between 5’2″ and 5’3″ — a common height for those with Latin American ancestry.

While her height may be influenced by her heritage, Colón-Zayas proudly embraces her Latin roots, which have played a major role in her success as an actress. Her professional theater debut came off-Broadway when she wrote, produced, and starred in a one-woman show titled Sistah Supreme. This show was a semi-autobiographical play that chronicles her experience growing up as a Latina woman in New York during the 1970s and 1980s.

‘The Bear’s continued awards season dominance has officially irked comedy fans, but there may be a solution https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/the-bears-continued-awards-season-dominance-has-officially-irked-comedy-fans-but-there-may-be-a-solution/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/the-bears-continued-awards-season-dominance-has-officially-irked-comedy-fans-but-there-may-be-a-solution/#respond Mon, 16 Sep 2024 15:50:16 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1754149 And a very easy one, at that.]]>

Another television awards show, another big night for The Bear. Such was the case at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards last night, where Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas all took home acting awards, and series creator Christopher Storer nabbed a directing award for the episode “Fishes.”

The treasure trove of awards that have been flung its way since its inception is just one of many examples of everyone loving The Bear, but at this point, just as many people seem to be fed up with it as well. At least, they’re fed up with its insistence on occupying the Comedy category.

https://twitter.com/beingbecks78/status/1835476934236455014

Those who are lacerating The Bear for competing in the Comedy category aren’t unfounded in their vexations. The Bear‘s material tends to skew quite heavy, with topics such as grief, estrangement, and professional power dynamics fueling its full-throttle, often corrosive emotional heft. In its intensity, it’s much more likely to leave an impression than other, more light-hearted shows that compete in the Comedy category.

However, it would be equally unfair to suggest that The Bear is taking up space that it doesn’t belong in. The Bear‘s comedic edge is razor-sharp and always on, and it’s in fact precisely because of its relationship with tension that it can have such a successful relationship with levity, and vice versa. The show’s dramatic indignance is symbiotic with its warmer relief, and the spirited ebb and flow that they enable together is a testament to The Bear‘s strength as a piece of art, and a powerful exercise in both dramatic and comedic storytelling.

It’s furthermore worth noting that the majority of programs competing in the Comedy section would, like The Bear, most aptly be characterized as dramedies. Such programs include Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs, and Hacks, the latter of which was the other big winner of the evening with a win for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Previous awards season darling Ted Lasso is another example.

This is to say that most of the shows competing in the Comedy category approach their comedy by rooting it in the complex, contradictory, often tragic and just as frequently ridiculous ordeal of the human condition; The Bear just happens to be really, really good at that. Just as noteworthy is the fact that much of Succession—the Emmys juggernaut of yesteryear—owes much of its prestige to its humorous stylings despite only ever competing in the Drama category, where the majority of its competitors did not have a similar relationship to comedy.

And yet, no one seemed to mind Succession‘s multi-year dominance, as if the Drama category is more prestigious than the Comedy category, or as if the Comedy category was created for shows that simply wouldn’t catch the eye of the Academy otherwise. This, in spite of the fact that the success of both The Bear and Succession come from the same thing; both shows understand how to tap into the raw power of the human condition, in all its pathos and venom and absurdity, and how to make an impression with it.

Neither is concerned with being especially funny or being especially dramatic, and are instead precisely interested in being the best versions of themselves. That artistic honesty goes as long a way as the deftness with which the material approached, and the very human emotional depth of it all is the key ingredient to making everything—from the drama to the comedy—stick and stand out. Baby Reindeer boasts similar merits.

So what’s the solution? A Dramedy category for all the shows that don’t lean far enough one way or the other? An abolishment of Drama and Comedy as categories altogether for the sake of one, ultimate Outstanding Programming category? A mass cognitive shift wherein we all learn to recognize that the shows are meant to elevate the prestige of the award, rather than the other way around?

Or what about accepting that the notion of serious competition beyond being nominated by the Academy (which is more than enough recognition) is kind of ridiculous and counterproductive to most all honest discourse around this specific artform? Indeed, maybe the solution is to stop making this a problem. The Bear is great, Hacks is great, Shōgun is great, Abbott Elementary is great. The planets are still aligned, and all the egos worth being intact are still intact. Carry on.

What song played every time ‘The Bear’ won a 2024 Emmy? https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/what-song-played-every-time-the-bear-won-a-2024-emmy/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/what-song-played-every-time-the-bear-won-a-2024-emmy/#respond Mon, 16 Sep 2024 04:13:15 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1753963 Was this a request from the cast?]]>

The Bear has continued its three-season span with more wins at the 2024 Emmys. The award show honored Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach with more acting accolades for the alleged comedy.

While there has been some confusion about whether The Bear should really be awarded for the comedy category, it has undoubtedly connected with audiences. Following young Carmy (White) following the suicide of his brother, Michael (Jon Bernthal), Carmy takes over his brother’s Chicago sandwich shop and plans to turn it into a fine dining experience. With the help of cousin, Richie (Moss-Bachrach) and sous-chef Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Carmy implements a new system and trains his workers to work at a higher caliber.

There are humorous elements, but by in large, the series deals with themes such as trauma and grief. This along with high-concept storytelling and directing has made the series worth its acclaim, with the season 3 episode “Forks” at the forefront of everyone’s mind. This year, acting and directing awards were awarded to a song familiar to viewers of the series, but may have been confusion for everyone else watching.

What song did the winners walk up to?

Every time The Bear won an award in 2024, the same song played as the winners graced the podium. The song wasn’t grabbed from any contemporary needle drop, but from the Swedish hardcore band, The Refused. The Bear is known for its many popular songs, but The Refused’s song became a well-known set piece in the series. In seasons 1 and 2, the song “New Noise” would drop during particularly stress-inducing moments in the series. And as anyone who watches The Bear knows, those moments are quite frequent. According to Esquire, the music of the show is put together by showrunner Christopher Sorer and executive producer Josh Senior, who have cultivated a mid-aughts aesthetic.

For some reason, the Academy decided that this would be the best song choice to pair with the series. Unlike Shōgun, which had a moving orchestral piece that served as its theme song, The Bear has no such luxury. The Refused may be an odd choice for actors accepting acclaim for their performances, but makes perfect sense for what the series is about. Leaning further and further away from its comedy roots, the FX series lives in the realm of pure anxiety from one episode to the next. Whether it is the 18-minute, one-take episode “Review” that takes place in the back of the kitchen in season 1, or the infamous family gathering in the episode “Fishes,” audiences have to steel themselves for the onslaught of emotional trauma. It may be a hard watch, but that’s showbiz. And evidently, it got results from the Academy.

‘The Bear’ may or may not be a comedy, but the Hulu series is continuing a problematic Emmys trend https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/the-bear-may-or-may-not-be-a-comedy-but-the-hulu-series-is-continuing-a-problematic-emmys-trend/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/the-bear-may-or-may-not-be-a-comedy-but-the-hulu-series-is-continuing-a-problematic-emmys-trend/#respond Mon, 16 Sep 2024 02:11:59 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1753882 But really, is this a comedy or drama?!]]>

Like whether or not September is too early for Halloween decor or if it’s acceptable to carve pumpkins when it’s still 100 degrees out, one of 2024’s biggest debates is whether The Bear should be counted as a comedy or drama.

While we all knew the Hulu series would win big at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, we might not have anticipated just how ionate people would be about this subject. But there’s another topic we should focus on: The Bear‘s Emmy dominance might actually be a problem, and it only looks to continue as the night goes on.

X @swiftieun1corn pointed out a trend with TV’s biggest awards show: Rewarding the same TV show year after year.

when Modern Family won Outstanding Comedy Series from 2010 to 2014? While the ABC sitcom has some great episodes and a talented, likable cast, did it really need to win five years in a row? Believe me when I tell you, I love The Bear and all the kind-hearted employees of The Beef (even though I’m frustrated as I am with Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy, but that’s another story). But I can it that many other smart TV comedies deserve Emmys, from Abbot Elementary to Hacks. We all know The Bear is great, but the show doesn’t need a million more awards to prove that.

Although it was obvious which show would win this year, the other shows in the Comedy category have talented actors, clever scripts, and huge fanbases, just like The Bear. While I haven’t watched Palm Royale, I’ve heard it’s awesome. If an underrated show that needs more love can’t win at the Emmys and get the accolades it should, then where can that happen?

I’m thrilled Liza Colón-Zayas won for playing the amazing Tina and happy Ebon Moss-Bachrach took home the Best ing Actor in a Comedy award. Tina is so kind and Richie is the funniest The Bear character in my humble opinion. And you can’t not swoon when an actor tells Rolling Stone they are “proud of all of us” who work on their show instead of making their nomination all about them. But The Bear doesn’t need to win every single category.

And yet, this problem won’t be solved today… or next year… or the year after that. And while the same comedy series might keep winning, at least we can find some comic relief in whether The Bear is really a comedy. As Eugene Levy joked during the opening monologue in what was one of the best moments of the 2024 Emmys: “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

I personally find some scenes of the show hilarious (although I might be the only one who thought the Fak family’s season 3 jokes about haunting each other amusing). Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Carmy’s fighting can be humorous and Sydney’s (Ayo Edebiri) constant desire to smooth everything over and stay calm in the face of intense pressure has made me chuckle once or twice. But The Bear season 3 is more sad than funny, and if it was considered a drama, more than a few people would be vindicated. There are definitely dark comedies that toe the line between the two genres, from The Big C to Better Things and Nurse Jackie, but The Bear has more emotionally weighted moments than side-splitting ones.

Oh well. I look forward to watching the 2025 Emmys… and season 4 of The Bear. But let’s put some good vibes out into the universe and hope that some (actual) comedies can take home some trophies. And let’s that while the beloved Hulu show’s category may be confusing, Wednesday was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy in 2023!

‘This is long overdue’: Marvel and ‘The Bear’ fans unite in joy after underrated MCU star’s much-deserved career triumph https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/this-is-long-overdue-marvel-and-the-bear-fans-unite-in-joy-after-underrated-mcu-stars-much-deserved-career-triumph/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/this-is-long-overdue-marvel-and-the-bear-fans-unite-in-joy-after-underrated-mcu-stars-much-deserved-career-triumph/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2024 14:12:51 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1750649 Someone would've been punished if this didn't happen. ]]>

Rejoice, Marvel fans because one of the franchise’s most fan-favorite and yet oddly underrated leading actors has finally won their first Emmy award. 2024’s Creative Emmys turned out to be a big night for The Bear, as the FX show brought home seven statuettes — with even more expected to follow from next week’s Primetime Emmys.

One of those was the award for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series, which deservedly went to Jon Bernthal for his role in the second season episode “Fishes.” This, if you can believe it, marks the actor’s first ever Emmy win. The Marvel and Bear fandoms are finding themselves increasingly intertwined of late, what with Ebon Moss-Bachrach playing the Thing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and now everyone is in agreement that Bernthal well and truly earned this amazing achievement.

In fact, most are convinced he should’ve already ticked it off his bucket list years ago.

And we all know which role he should have won an Emmy for. Bernthal is, of course, most known to Marvel lovers as Frank Castle in both Netflix’s Daredevil and The Punisher series. There have been four on-screen Punishers over the decades, but 99% of fans would likely agree Bernthal is the best thanks to his nuanced and multi-layered take on the anti-hero character.

His portrayal really should’ve earned him some real awards recognition, but the show’s comic book trappings likely caused his performance to be overlooked. Thankfully, since the show was cancelled in 2018, things have changed a little on that front — see Black Panther‘s Best Picture Oscar nomination and WandaVision‘s Emmy domination earlier this decade — and Bernthal’s win for The Bear helps ease the injustice.

I mean, the guy gave us an immortal meme template that’s still going strong eight years later. If that’s not proof of Emmy-winning material I don’t know what is.

Some even think Bernthal should’ve won an Emmy for his role as Shane on The Walking Dead, back during the zombie drama’s early creative peak, and you know what maybe they’re right.

Seeing as this Emmy win seems to have woken up the slumbering Punisher collective, the good news is that Bernthal is about to make his long-awaited return to the MCU in 2025’s Daredevil: Born Again. It’s currently unclear exactly how hefty a role he’ll have in the Disney Plus revival, but given that he featured in the (unreleased) Comic-Con trailer and attended D23 with the cast the odds are high that he’ll have a significant presence.

It’s still too early to say whether Born Again will live up to all the hype and be the continuation of Netflix’s Defenders Saga we deserve, but thanks to WandaVision and now his Bear success, it’s not entirely impossible for Bernthal to add another Emmy nomination to his resume in a couple of years’ time. One Emmy, two Emmys, penny and dime.

‘I’m the luckiest girl in the world’: The Oscar-winning icon behind stool-softening dairy just made a new mark after winning her first Emmy https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/celebrities/im-the-luckiest-girl-in-the-world-the-oscar-winning-icon-behind-stool-softening-dairy-just-made-a-new-mark-after-winning-her-first-emmy/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/celebrities/im-the-luckiest-girl-in-the-world-the-oscar-winning-icon-behind-stool-softening-dairy-just-made-a-new-mark-after-winning-her-first-emmy/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2024 08:39:06 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1750493 "I just never thought in my life that I would get to do work at this level."]]>

Jamie Lee Curtis has looked back fondly on some of her less acclaimed roles, following her win for outstanding guest actress at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.  Curtis, who recently collected the trophy for her buzzy role as Donna Berzatto in season two of FX’s The Bear, revealed at the ceremony that she “never thought in my life” that she’d be enjoying success this late into her career, thanks in large part to her previous role as an Activia spokesperson.

Fans of the actress will that she spent years promoting the food company’s yogurt line, appearing in multiple commercials talking up its stool-softening and laxative benefits. While the commercials might’ve led to something of a stain on her career, Curtis has since reminisced on their role in the trajectory of her career, which now includes half an EGOT with an Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once and this most recent Emmy win for The Bear.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” Curtis told reporters after collecting her Emmys trophy. “I’ve sold yogurt that makes you s**t for seven years, and I just never thought in my life that I would get to do work at this level of depth and complexity and intelligence.” The Halloween star went on to describe her last few years of success as the “thrill of my creative life,” before commending her fellow nominees in the Emmys category.

Curtis’ win is impressive not just because of her previous laxative credits, but because of the competitiveness of the category. Curtis beat out the likes of Olivia Colman, who also appeared in a guest role in The Bear, as well as Hacks’ Kaitlin Olson, Only Murders in the Building’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig. Incidentally, Wiig actually spoofed the very Activia commercials Curtis appeared in during a skit on the sketch show ten years ago.

Curtis appeared as part of one of the more talked-about moments from The Bear’s second season, portraying the erratic mother of Jeremy Allen White’s Carmen in an episode titled “Fishes”. The star-studded episode also featured Sarah Paulson, John Mulaney, and Bob Odenkirk, with Curtis later describing her appearance as “the role of a lifetime.”

In other Lee news, the actress is gearing up for the release of Freaky Friday 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 original that will see her reprise her role as body-switcher Tess Coleman opposite Lindsay Lohan’s Anna Coleman. That nostalgic role alone is enough to make up for any previous poo-related credits, and the fact that Curtis earned a major payday for those Activia commercials is truly mother behavior.

After all, even Hollywood icons can sometimes feel a little clogged up.
