Calling all TV fans: Apple TV is free this weekend — Jan. 3-5 — and it’s absolutely time to take advantage of some of the most compelling shows on any streaming platform out there.

WATCH: A free weekend of Apple TV

Apple announced the decision to offer a free weekend of TV on Dec. 30. The streaming platform will be free on any device where Apple TV is available as long as you have an Apple ID.

Here are 7 shows to check out this weekend:

Severance

The first season of Severance debuted in 2022 and the show has clung on to popularity ever since. Now that the second season’s premiere date — Jan. 17! — is in sight, it’s the perfect time to catch up.

Silo

Silo is one of the literary sci-fi adaptations on streaming right now. Based on the Wool series by Hugh Howley, the show follows the stories of roughly 10,000 people who live in a silo underground. The show was renewed for two more seasons in December.

Shrinking

Harrison Ford has earned rave reviews as the lead of this 2023 series created by a few of the people who also brought us Ted Lasso. Jason Segal stars as a too-honest therapist who is surprised by how receptive others are to exactly that vibe. The series was renewed for a third season in October.

Bad Sisters

This dark comedy stars Sharon Horgan as one of the Garvey sisters, who have often plotted against a toxic brother-in-law who mysteriously dies. It is unclear if the second season will be the show’s final.

The Afterparty

Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse), is the man behind this murder mystery that stars Tiffany Haddish as a detective who is set on solving the crime. The second season is the final season of the series.

Black Bird

Black Bird follows the real-life story of criminal Jimmy Keene, who was given the possibility of early release if he snitched on murderer Larry Hall. The second season is the final season of the series.

Slow Horses

The streamer greenlit four seasons of this series, led by Gary Oldman, before it even came out — and for good reason. Slow Horses stars Oldman as the director of a halfway house for British spies.

Sci-fi lovers will finally get to find out what really happened to engineer Juliette Nichols, played by Ferguson, when she steps outside of the silo she’s been locked in her entire life. Talk about a culture shock?

For those who haven’t seen the show or need a quick refresher, Silo takes place 10,000 years into the future. The show follows an eclectic group of people who’ve resided in an underground bunker their entire lives – it’s all they know, and they believe it’s their only choice of survival. The world outside of the bunker is supposed to be toxic. However, Juliette wants to find out if this is true or a falsehood, so she escapes the silo to search through the rubble of irradiated wasteland for answers.

The Silo season one finale ends with Juliette escaping, and the second season picks up right where the first season left off. Juliette has stepped outside of the silo into no man’s land and is trying to figure out how to get oxygen before her time runs out.

HOW TO WATCH: Silo on Apple (free trial)

Here’s everything you need to know to watch season 2 of Silo, including airtimes and streaming information.

WHERE TO WATCH: Silo Season 2 on Apple (free trial)

 • Where to stream: Apple
 • Season 2 premiere: Nov. 15, 2024

Silo premieres exclusively on Apple on Nov. 15, 2024. The streaming platform is currently offering a free trial for new s who sign up. The new season features 10 episodes.

Ferguson says her character is ‘nearly on the spectrum’

In an interview with Radio Times, Ferguson described her character as “socially awkward” and “nearly on the spectrum.” However, she’s figuring out how to keep herself safe despite some uncertainty that arises after she meets White Lotus star Steve Zahn, who plays the role of Solo in the new season.

“She has to be in a situation now where she’s handling human beings, and it’s something that she doesn’t know how that works,” the Mission Impossible and Dune star told the outlet. “You know, she’s up against a person [Solo] who you don’t know, is a threat, is an absolute lunatic, or is there to and help.”

She added, “And they create a bond, and that’s very unusual, but with that comes a lot of compromise and issues and very scary scenarios. So it’s not a machine, but actually a person she has to work around.”

Ferguson said that her character is “constantly filled with fear” as she learns to navigate the unknown. “Taking her out of that, putting her outside with a new perspective of view, horizons, fear, loneliness… And then the complete and utter unknown, that is another stepping stone for her.”

Perfect Rotten Tomatoes debut

In the official season 2 trailer, Juliette is seen walking around outside of the silo seeking answers. Does she survive? You’ll have to watch and see.

If you’re wondering if the second iteration of the series is as good as the first, the Apple TV+ series debuted with a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show is based on a trilogy of books by Hugh Howey: Wool (2011), Shift (2013), and Dust (2013). The novels tell the story of 50 silos located throughout the country, with the first being in Georgia.

The second season of Silo will return to Apple TV Plus on Friday, Nov. 15, and fans will finally find out: what exactly happened to Juliette once she stepped outside the confines of the silo where she’s lived her entire life?

Watch now: Silo on Apple TV+

Season one concluded with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) escaping. Now that she’s outside the silo, she has to find a way to get safe oxygen – and she isn’t sure where to look.

As viewers know, Silo is set 10,000 years in the future and follows a group of people who have lived in an underground silo since birth. The world outside the silo is toxic and dangerous — or so they’ve been led to believe. Juliette begins to question the story everyone has been told and decides to plot her escape, despite the resistance she faces as a result.

The location of the silo is not disclosed in the series, but it seems to be in the United States based on the characters in the show. The books that the show is based on explain that there are 50 silos throughout the country, and the first is in Georgia. Here’s what we know about the second season of Silo.

Silo is based on a trilogy of books

Silo might seem like the type of dystopia perfectly created for TV, but the show is actually based on a trilogy of books by Hugh Howey: Wool (2011), Shift (2013), and Dust (2013). The books follow the same general premise as the series.

A lot of the original cast is back

Many of the cast from season one have returned for the second season. This includes Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robinson, Common, and Chinaza Uche. Newcomers include Steve Zahn.

The second season begins where the first ended

The second season will pick up right where the first left off: Ferguson’s Juliette has made it outside the silo and is now looking for a way to survive, as her suit is running out of oxygen. The season’s trailer appears to indicate that Juliette will explore another silo that’s clearly been abandoned.

When does Silo return?

Silo begins streaming on Apple TV Plus on Friday, Nov. 15. New episodes will debut each week until Jan. 17, 2025.

2023 was a great year for the entertainment industry, but what new television debuts managed to steal our attention from long-running contenders?

It’s ittedly hard to keep up with a year so overburdened with great movies and amazing TV premieres. Nowadays, there are literally hundreds of programs in each major streaming platform to choose from, and the result is more often than not scrolling for half an hour, indecisive, and ultimately settling for something random, only to learn that it was mediocre at best.

Well, not if we have anything to say about it. In this article, we’re singling out the top 10 television premieres in 2023. These shows are all newcomers, mind you, selected specifically for airing their first season this year — so don’t be surprised if a lot of acclaimed, returning programs are missing.

10. Percy Jackson and the Olympians

https://youtu.be/uHb7au6Gmls?si=SwTJpUhbwTc2wNJo

Premiere date: December 20 Platform: Disney Plus

Now, I know what you’re thinking; The new Percy Jackson series hasn’t even come out yet. But this is such a big moment for genre enthusiasts and the fantasy community that it will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest premieres of 2023. I mean, what better way to cap off this already amazing year than a Percy Jackson adaptation that finally gets Rick Riordan’s books right?

9. The Continental

Premiere date: September 22 Platform: Peacock & Prime Video

The new spinoff miniseries set in the John Wick universe finally expands the tale of Winston Scott. Set in the ‘70s, The Continental depicts how Winston rose to become the manager of the New York Continental while touching on real-world events like the Winter of Discontent and the rise of the American mafia to power. And the best part? This ensemble was led by Mel Gibson, portraying Cormac O’Connor, the former owner of the Continental.

8. Gen V

Premiere date: September 29 Platform: Prime Video

Speaking of the never-ending spinoffs, this new Boys entry on Prime Video features the same twists and grotesque elements that made the original show such a hit on the platform, but this time with a completely new ensemble of characters who take on new threats and go through “Supe university.” This is basically The Boys if it was about a bunch of hormonal teenagers, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you happen to be a fan of Eric Kripke’s spiraling live-action universe.

7. Ahsoka

Premiere date: August 22 Platform: Disney Plus

Ahsoka finally gave our beloved Snips her own live-action outing in the expanding MandoVerse. Rosario Dawson portrays the titular Ahsoka Tano in a story based on Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy, while also adding elements from Dave Filoni’s own Star Wars Rebels. What’s more, the Mouse House once again brought back Hayden Christensen to portray Anakin Skywalker, so if it’s fan-service moments that you want, then Ahsoka is more than enough to quench your inner Star Wars stan.

6. The Fall of the House of Usher

Premiere date: October 12 Platform: Netflix

It’s difficult to explain what The Fall of the House of Usher is really about, but if you’re a fan of the gothic horror genre and its peculiar aesthetics, then this is a show you definitely don’t want to miss. Based on various works of Edgar Allan Poe, and most specifically the eponymous Fall of the House of Usher story from 1840, this series deals with a number of supernatural phenomena and follows two separate timelines as they slowly unravel and come together by the end of season 1.

5. Shrinking

Premiere date: January 27 Platform: Apple TV

If I were asked to describe Shrinking in one word, “cathartic” would be the word to do it justice, if only just. Starring Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) and the legendary Harrison Ford, this is a story of two therapists as they try to navigate the lives of their patients, with the former trying to deal with the death of his wife by adapting a new therapeutic method. Things go wrong before they eventually go right, and you’ll end up learning a lot about yourself and the people in your life before the journey is through.

4. Blue Eye Samurai

https://youtu.be/nJ1yQn17lbE?si=6CSZksw6oRI_y7PU

Premiere date: November 3 Platform: Netflix

Blue Eye Samurai is a new sensation taking the anime world by storm. This is essentially a labor of love from a husband and wife team who go by the name of Michael Green and Amber Noizumi. You may recognize the former for his work as a co-writer on a number of acclaimed flicks such as Logan and Blade Runner 2049, and the man has once again hit a jackpot with Blue Eye Samurai. The story is essentially about a swordmaster on a quest to exact revenge against four white men who are remaining illegally in Japan during Sakoku in the Edo period. Need I say more?

3. Silo

Premiere date: May 5 Platform: Apple TV Plus

2023 hasn’t been a great year for fans of hard science fiction, but Silo mitigated this drought to a large extent thanks to its original narrative. This new series by Apple TV Plus is set in a dystopian future where a group of human beings live in a massive silo that expands hundreds of stories below the surface. We can’t tell you much more without spoiling the intricate narrative but know that this new series led by the brilliant Rebecca Ferguson will definitely be worth your while.

2. The Last of Us

Premiere date: January 25 Platform: Max

Breaking the video game curse in a most fundamental way, The Last of Us is a brilliant tale of loss, love, and perseverance in a world gone mad. We follow the story of Joel Miller, who is a survivor of a fungal apocalypse that turned the world’s population into mindless zombies and destroyed civilization on a large scale. The Last of Us video game by Naughty Dog was one of the most acclaimed pieces of art in the last decade, so it was a joy to see its TV adaptation confidently imitate that success in live-action.

1. One Piece

Premiere date: August 31 Platform: Netflix

Last but not least, we come to an adaptation that has no right being as good as it is. Many people would say that a live-action One Piece with all of its idiosyncrasies is a terrible idea, and we’d usually be inclined to agree with them, but showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda somehow proved everyone wrong by managing the impossible. Sure, gatekeepers and manga loyalists might take certain issues with the extra-medium translation of all those quirky elements that make One Piece so special, but this is more than we could ever ask for in an inevitable live-action rendition of Eiichiro Oda’s timeless masterpiece.

Who would have thought the company that made its fortune selling computers and phones would one day branch out into making TV shows — and do a brilliant job of it, at that? Innovation has never been in short supply at Apple, and it turns out that truism applies when it comes to them making entertainment, and not just providing us with devices on which to consume film and television. With that said, it was always clear that the tech mammoth was treating this seriously, with a focus on what seems to be highly produced, well-casted creative content that is a little reminiscent of HBO series’. As a result, Apple TV is home to a ton of brilliant TV shows with big names, and here’s our list of the very best of them.

10. Roar

It’s the nature of anthology shows that they can be hit and miss. Even The Twilight Zone had some stinkers, after all. However, this collection of episodes that delve into the notion of womanhood is pretty consistent across the board, helped out by its band of fantastic female leads. Roar is based on a short story collection by the Irish writer Cecelia Ahern, and while each episode contains a dose of dark humor about the role of women in the world, they are pretty different plot-wise. Leading ladies across the one season of content we have so far include Nicole Kidman, Issa Rae, Alison Brie, and Betty Gilpin. The male ing cast has some really big names too, including Nick Kroll and Hugh Dancy.

9. Central Park

This hilarious animated series chronicles the lives of a family who live in a castle in Central Park, and their attempts to save their home from being destroyed by greedy developers. Central Park is made by Loren Bouchard (of Bob’s Burgers fame), and the shows have plenty of similarities, from their focus on family dynamics to their zany characters and feel-good nature against the backdrop of more sinister forces. Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, and Daveed Diggs are just some of the big names in the main cast, but throughout the series, viewers have also heard from Patti LuPone, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Beatriz, and a whole host of other big names.

8. Mythic Quest

There are few more well-known shows in the world than It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and three of its most important people are behind this hilarious show about a fictional video game studio that makes a game called Mythic Quest, hence the title of the series. Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney created the series, with the latter also starring as the overbearing head of the studio. He’s ed by a cast that includes Danny Pudi (Community) and David Hornsby, and the show has had some excellent guest appearances too, such as Anthony Hopkins, Jake Johnson, and Snoop Dogg. The on-screen shenanigans will keep any viewer hooked, but you’ll especially love Mythic Quest if you’re into gaming and the culture around it.

7. Silo

Rashida Jones and Rebecca Ferguson are two of the massive names that lead this dystopian sci-fi series, based on the Wool novels and stories by Hugh Howey. The show is set in an underground silo comprised of 144 levels. The society has incredibly strict rules and is fraught with danger, although as we learn throughout the show, there may be more to be afraid of inside the underground world than out of it. Ferguson plays an engineer who is slowly becoming disillusioned with the society around her as she learns more about its secrets, and Jones is an I.T. professional having similar doubts. Other big names include Tim Robbins and the rapper Common.

6. The Morning Show

Though Apple TV had been making shows for a few years by the time The Morning Show was released in 2019, this series quickly became the burgeoning studio’s marquee attraction. Starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell, the show follows the aftermath of sexual misconduct allegations being made against a popular morning television show host, and how the consequences ripple through the network involved. Plenty of other big hitters have screen time throughout the series, including Jon Hamm, Mindy Kaling, and Martin Short, but no matter who’s on-screen the drama remains consistent. An interesting watch that touches on some intriguing topics while airing the dirty laundry of showbiz types — the writers probably didn’t have to go far to find inspiration for their plots.

5. Shrinking

Scrubs and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence has another hit on his hands with Shrinking, the brilliantly funny series about a recently widowed therapist who channels his grief into getting a little too involved in his patients’ lives. Jason Segel headlines as Jimmy, the shrink at the center of the show, and the series is bolstered by the presence of several other big names, including Harrison Ford and Ted McGinley. While Jimmy’s behavior verges (and often crosses over into) unprofessional, the show has real charm and heart, managing to portray the rawness of a man in grief while also giving viewers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to balance out the darkness. Honest, moving, and hilarious.

4. Ted Lasso

Jason Sudeikis stars as the titular character in this fish-out-of-water comedy turned surprisingly deep and heartwrenching dramedy. Lasso is an American Football coach who is hired by a middling soccer team in London, despite having a complete lack of knowledge about the beautiful game. Helped by his friend and confidant Coach Beard, we see Ted and his new team (the fictional AFC Richmond) go through ups, downs, and everything in between, all while getting some truly heart-melting moments and a surprisingly good portrayal of U.K. football culture. Sudeikis was the biggest name on the cast list before the show dropped from a global perspective, but because of its huge success many of the others are now household names. A brilliant, uplifting watch, with plenty of homages thrown in for good measure, too.

3. Platonic

Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen are two of the biggest names in Hollywood, and they lead this sweet comedy about two former friends who reconnect and begin to exert a (mostly) positive influence in each other’s lives as they deal with issues like divorce and lacking partners. Charming and insightful, Platonic has smart writing and believable characters, but its two A-list leads and their brilliant chemistry is what turns it from a decent watch into one of the best things Apple TV has done so far. You’ll definitely end most episodes with a smile on your face.

2. Slow Horses

When you have massive stars like Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas in your cast, it’s hard to make something bad. Add in an excellent bit of source material and a unique take on an old genre, and you have something truly special, like Old Horses. The series follows hapless MI5 rejects who have messed up previous missions but haven’t been fired, so get stuck in a spot called Slough House where they’re forced to drudge through paperwork in an attempt to wear them down into reg. Despite this, they end up investigating some of the most intriguing crimes that might just have massive ramifications for Great Britain. Oldman is the sadistic boss trying to drive everyone out, and Thomas is the devious deputy director-general of the spy organization.

1. Severance

Parks and Recreation star Adam Scott stars in this sci-fi thriller that’s quickly become a critical darling thanks to its unique, fresh premise, brilliant plotting, and even better acting. The show follows the employees of Lumon Industries, a biotech company that uses a new technology to “separate” the consciousness of its employees between at-work and at home, which leads to some pretty strange outcomes. John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette are just three of the legendary names that help Scott to turn Severance into such a phenomenal watch.

Science fiction, the genre that tickles the imagination and encourages pondering the limitless possibilities of the great unknown, remains one of the best things about Apple TV Plus. The platform is like the new cool kid on the streaming block, embracing the sci-fi genre with a lineup of shows that mix mind-blowing storytelling with concepts that challenge the brain. The service offers a delightful playground for those who revel in pondering the “what if” scenarios, whether it’s dystopian futures, alternate realities, or even unimaginable space epics.

Each series invites viewers to enter unknown realms, forcing them to question their assumptions and view the human condition from a new perspective. However, with so many alternatives available, it can take time to know where to begin. This list, then, features the best science fiction shows on Apple TV Plus, all of which will transport you to exciting new worlds.

For All Mankind (2019 -)

A fascinating science fiction series, For All Mankind, debuted on Apple TV in November 2019. The show, which Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi developed, imagines a world where the space race continued indefinitely. The show’s premise hinges on the Soviet Union beating the United States to the moon, prolonging the Cold War and keeping the space race going for decades. The Space Race does not die down after the first lunar landing, driving the protagonists into more space research and, eventually, the colonization of the Moon and Mars. The story skillfully interweaves historical figures and events with fictional ones.

Fictional astronauts coexist with real-life heroes like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in this alternate history of NASA. One exciting aspect of the show is that it tries to deal with societal issues. To challenge the racism and sexism of the time, it portrays a more diverse group of astronauts than was factually accurate at the time. For All Mankind closely examines the astronauts, engineers, and their families’ daily routines. It shows the triumph and the human cost of pushing forward in space exploration. Viewers get an inside look at the rivalries, friendships, stresses, and personal tolls of people who work to expand human knowledge of space and its possibilities.

See (2019 -2022)

The dystopian future of See, created by Steven Knight, is one in which a virus has wiped out most of humanity and rendered the remaining people blind. The story takes place centuries after this disaster when people learned to get by without sight. The inability to see has not stopped humans from communicating, hunting, building, and forming communities. At this point, the concept of vision has become a myth, a legend that people scarcely believe existed.

Jason Momoa plays the series’ lead character, the Alkenny tribe leader and gifted warrior Baba Voss. The story takes a surprising turn when Baba Voss’s wife gives birth to twins with the legendary ability to see. This development causes friction because some view the kids as a threat while others consider them a miracle. How people and communities would change and grow if they lost their sight is a central theme of See. It explores intriguing possibilities, like the evolution of language and the development of new ways of traveling and fighting. In this universe, the senses of smell, sound, touch, and taste take center stage.

Amazing Stories (2020)

Launched in March 2020, Amazing Stories is an anthology series remaking of the Steven Spielberg–created original from 1985. Each episode of Amazing Stories presents a standalone story, allowing for a broad range of narratives, characters, and settings. These stories frequently have fantastical or supernatural themes. The series’ episodes range from thrilling adventures and thought-provoking science fiction to poignant tragedies with a dash of magic, illustrating the show’s dedication to various storytelling techniques and tones.

Time travel, aliens, and the supernatural are just a few topics the show covers, with human emotions and experiences serving as a common thread throughout. Regarding production value, Amazing Stories stands out thanks to its top-notch visual effects, cinematography, and set designs. Several well-known actors guest starred in different episodes, adding to the show’s prestige and making it more enjoyable to watch.

Invasion (2021 -)

Invasion, created by Simon Kinberg and David Weil, takes a global look at how an alien invasion would affect us all and is set across multiple continents, providing a wide-reaching, multicultural exploration of such an event. The storyline takes a grounded, realistic approach to the science fiction genre, focusing not only on the spectacle of an extraterrestrial invasion but also on the human drama that such an event would undoubtedly cause. Different personalities in different corners of the world watch the events of the “invasion” unfold in their own unique ways.

The show devotes a lot of time to creating its characters so that viewers can identify with them and care about what happens to them as a result of their involvement with the alien occurrences. Just before the attack on Long Island, one of the key protagonists, Aneesha, learns of her husband’s infidelity. Aneesha’s emotional investment in the survival of her family, despite her husband’s betrayal, enriches the show overall. The aliens themselves don’t show up until later in the first season, but once they arrive, the tone of the show shifts to something more sinister and horror-oriented.

Foundation (2021 -)

Foundation is based on Isaac Asimov’s groundbreaking novel series, considered a classic in the science fiction canon. The story takes place millions of years in the future when a massive Galactic Empire rules the galaxy. As the empire shows indications of decadence and imminent collapse, the story follows a group of intellectuals trying to preserve knowledge. The Foundation is a collective of people working to compile all human knowledge to help future generations recover from the coming dark period.

The series’ plot is notoriously complex because of its time-and-space-hopping nature. Politics, religion, and the disintegration of society are examined, along with the resiliency of the human spirit. ‘Psychohistory,’ a fictional scientific subject created by Hari Seldon that allows him to foresee the future using math, plays a pivotal role in the plot. The series boasts impressive production value with stunning visual effects and grand world-building. In addition to Jared Harris as Hari Seldon and Lee Pace as Brother Day, the cast also features the talents of Lou Llobell as Gaal and Leah Harvey as Salvor.

Severance (2022 -)

The sci-fi psychological thriller series Severance centers on the activities of Lumon Industries, a company specializing in a groundbreaking process called “severance.” This process creates a wall in the mind between a worker’s professional and personal life. The first season of Severance explores the implications of this extreme measure by delving into dark and dystopian topics. Mark, the protagonist, is seen navigating his employment and developing an interest in the severance procedure during the episodes. Mark cannot cope with the loss of his wife and views severance as a way out of his anguish.

As the show unfolds, it becomes clear that Lumon Industries’ approach is far from ideal. The “innies,” or work selves of those who have undergone severance, live confined lives within Lumon Industries, devoid of joy and personal fulfillment. The company is portrayed as malicious, with a founder worshipped as a holy figure. The show is Apple’s first original series in Korean. It premiered in 2021 to coincide with the launching of the streaming service in South Korea.

The protagonist of the science fiction thriller Dr. Brain is a talented scientist obsessed with finding new ways to access the brain’s consciousness and memories. His life turns upside down when his family dies in a mysterious accident. He then uses his skills to access his family’s brains and figure out what happened. The problem is that it starts getting harder and harder for him to distinguish those recollections from his own. The series takes viewers on an exciting ride of mystery and intrigue.

Snoopy in Space (2019-2021)

It successfully captures the endearing humor and heart of the Peanuts brand while incorporating a contemporary animation style. The show also contains an educational component, explaining NASA’s work and introducing the concept of space exploration to kids. Moreover, Snoopy in Space is an animated series that people of all ages can enjoy.

Shining Girls (2022)

When Kirby is brutally attacked by a serial killer named Harper, who can travel through time, her life turns dark. The show examines trauma and gendered violence, highlighting the long-term effects of such experiences on survivors. The story revolves around Kirby’s grit and will as she faces a perverted reality and fights to take her life back from her assailant. Elisabeth Moss gives a riveting portrayal of Kirby Mazrachi, expertly conveying the complexity of the character’s conflicting traits of strength and fragility.

Silo (2023-)

The post-apocalyptic setting of Silo provides the backdrop for an exciting dystopian drama series. The show, based on Hugh Howey’s best-selling novel, follows the survivors of a global catastrophe as they seek refuge in a secret underground silo. The Silo is a closed community with its own set of norms and social order. The series focuses on The Silo’s resident lead character, a brilliant mechanic named Juliette. When a string of unexplained deaths occurs, she begins to investigate. Because of her inquisitive nature, Juliette discovers a sinister secret that The Silo’s leaders have kept hidden for decades, if not centuries.

As Juliette digs deeper, she discovers that The Silo’s rulers have been using deception to keep the populace under their thumb. The murders were not accidental but were planned to prevent witnesses from speaking out. Juliette, accompanied by a band of rebels, sets out on a dangerous mission to inform the rest of The Silo’s population of the truth. They face several obstacles, including internal power struggles, betrayals, and the cold, brutal world outside.

Apple TV+ is using Twitter‘s extended video time in a clever marketing ploy to get them hooked on one of its latest series. The streaming platform has released the entire first episode of Silo on the social media site just ahead of the season finale. This is thanks to Twitter’s recently added feature which allows Blue subscribers to videos up to two hours long, but will it pull more traffic across to Apple TV+?

The series is based on the post-apocalyptic book series of the same name written by American writer Hugh Howey, where humanity has been forced to live in a silo that goes deep underground due to the outside having become too toxic to survive. Generations upon generations have now existed in the silo, for so long that they cannot what led to them having to live this way in the first place, but what they do know is that going outside is a death sentence.

The series has a stellar cast with Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, and Dame Harriet Walter playing lead roles. It was released on Apple TV+ on May 5, with the first two episodes released together and the rest released on a weekly basis. The final episode concluding the first season will be released on June 30, with the second season already confirmed. Silo has received praise from audiences and critics, as well as crime/thriller writer Stephen King. The only issue is, being an Apple original, it hasn’t quite seen the viewing figures that it deserves, so pushing it on Twitter may not be the worst thing.

This may mark the first time that a series episode or film has been deliberately released on Twitter after there have been numerous incidents of s somehow releasing entire movies on the platform, some of them still in theatres at the time. Whether or not this experiment will be deemed a success depends on if Apple sees an increase in viewers on the show, but this might become a tactic that other platforms may hop onto in a bid to gain our attention and drag us to their content.

‘That is the pinnacle of unfair’: Stephen King’s new favorite show just got renewed, but he still isn’t happy https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/that-is-the-pinnacle-of-unfair-stephen-kings-new-favorite-show-just-got-renewed-but-he-still-isnt-happy/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/tv/that-is-the-pinnacle-of-unfair-stephen-kings-new-favorite-show-just-got-renewed-but-he-still-isnt-happy/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2023 07:42:49 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1515778 Netflix subscribers would like to have a word.]]>

In a world where the number of expensive streaming genre shows safe from execution grows smaller by the day, you’d have thought that Stephen King would be thrilled beyond belief that one of his new favorites was renewed for a second season.

It was a coincidence that Apple TV’s atmospheric and eminently engaging Silo was confirmed for a return just 24 hours after the author had given it his wholehearted seal of approval, but it turns out that not even pop culture legends are immune to the agonizing wait between new episodes.

Given his status as one of the most recognizable writers there’s ever been – who saw his novel Lisey’s Story adapted into an episodic adventure by the very same platform – you’d have thought King would have the ability to gain access to the entire first season of Silo by simply picking up the phone or sending an email to just ask.

Instead, he’s been left infuriated by the fact he has to wait until Friday just like the rest of the peasants to discover what happens next, a refreshingly old-school approach to rolling out fresh content in the age of binge-watching.

As unfair as it may be, King can at least sleep soundly in the knowledge that Silo is guaranteed to make a comeback to the small screen with three episodes still left to air, something that’s becoming increasingly unheard of in the streaming era, where the number-crunchers typically wait until the whole thing has been rolled out to subscribers before determining whether or not it’s worth the investment to return to the well for more.

In the past, horror novelist Stephen King has utilized his always-active Twitter to praise an abundance of new television shows that seemingly catch his eye. Just yesterday, King offered the highest of praises for Apple TV Plus’ Silo — the platform’s newest sci-fi spectacle which has just officially been renewed for a jaw-dropping second season.

As per Deadline, the engaging dystopian drama, based on Hugh Howley’s novel series Wool, was effectively renewed due to the massive impact that it’s making on the streaming service. As it stands, the series boasts its position as the #1 drama in Apple TV Plus’ history, along with its viewership growing in colossal numbers ever since its premiere back at the beginning of May.

ed by a knockout cast of A-Listers such as Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, and Common, the dystopian saga blends beautiful cinematography and otherworldly madness together in an episodic experience that keeps viewers undoubtedly coming back for more. In fact, the proof is undeniably in the pudding, with the eye-popping series currently boasting an 87 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With ever-growing series such as Yellowjackets receiving the seal of approval from King himself, it’s worth noting that perhaps the acclaimed author can increase Silo’s audience tenfold and introduce the sci-fi extravaganza to an entirely new audience of television fanatics.

Until further information about the show’s season 2 is announced, folks can stream Silo season 1 episodes on Apple TV Plus right now.

If there’s one person out there who knows more than most about crafting genre fiction that lives long in the memory, Stephen King has to be designated one of the highest spots on the list. He’s also got a habit of recommending film and television projects to his millions of followers on social media, so maybe it’s time for everyone to sit up and take notice of Silo.

That’s not to say the episodic dystopian epic based on the Wool series of novels by Hugh Howley is some sort of underrated gem that nobody’s ever heard of, but it still hasn’t been finding the size of audience it truly deserves by way of its existence as an Apple TV original. If it aired on something like Netflix, Prime Video, or Max it might be a bigger deal, but it hasn’t quite cracked the mainstream yet.

Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Rebecca Ferguson, bolstered by a starry cast including Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Common, and countless more besides, and held together by a stellar Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 87 percent, King is absolutely right in his assessment of the show.

Set in a future where a community dwells inside a gigantic silo that spans hundreds of stories, 10,000 souls are bound by the rules and regulations they’ve been conditioned to believe guarantee their safety. Of course, Ferguson’s engineer Juliette Nichols doesn’t quite buy into the hype, and she inevitably discovers conspiratorial secrets that could rock the enclosed society to its very core.

Apple’s streaming originals don’t quite capture the zeitgeist in the same way many of its competitors originals do, but Silo is one that’s definitely worth seeking out, even without the Stephen King seal of approval.
