Most people might have a “huh” moment when you realize you’re cackling over the idea of destroying a ship carrying aid to starving people. But, proving that there’s nothing too repellent and supervillainous for Republican politicians, Senator Lindsey Graham is praying for the obliteration of the Freedom Flotilla ship Madleen, which is currently trying to break Israel’s aid blockade of Gaza.

On board are climate activist Greta Thunberg, Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham, and European Parliament member Rima Hassan, with the plan being that having high-profile people on board will create publicity and perhaps make the IDF think twice before they attack.

Make no mistake, this is actual no kidding courage. Just last month, the Conscience, another Freedom Flotilla ship carrying aid, was attacked and severely damaged by Israeli drones while sailing through international waters off the coast of Malta. Before the launch, Thunberg underlined why she’s putting her life on the line:

“We are doing this because, no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying. Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity. And no matter how dangerous this mission is, it’s not even nearly as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the live-streamed genocide.”

Davos Seaworth actor Liam Cunningham shared similar sentiments, saying:

“I have to be able to look at my grandkids when they when they hit their teens and say to me, ‘What did you do during this?’ I do not want to be one of those people that said, ‘I didn’t do anything’. In World War Two, there was an excuse that you didn’t know what was going on with the Holocaust – an obscene event that was going on – there was an excuse to say, ‘I didn’t know’. Your only answer [for not acting now] to your grandkids, or your kids, when they grow up is, ‘I didn’t care’. The world cannot stand by and allow this to continue.”

True bravery

Sacrifice, bravery, and ethical commitment like this are a foreign language to men like Lindsey Graham, who are content to fatten themselves in corporate-backed do-nothing Washington jobs while actively making the planet a worse place to live on.

In what may be a turning of the tide, the response to Graham’s post is widespread disgust: “What a cowardly and despicable creature you are”, “a despicable human being”: “You’re a deranged psychopath who should be frog-marched to a jail cell at The Hague for the rest of your stinking putrid life”, and dubbing him “a cheerleader for mass murder”.

Make no mistake, the Madleen will inevitably meet an aggressive response from Israel. Previous attempts to bring aid to Gaza have seen aid workers killed, multiple people seriously injured by shrapnel, and boats destroyed in open water. We can only hope that the celebrities on board mean Israel holds back this time for fear of terrible publicity. But, at this point, what’s a couple more bodies for them?

Donald Trump is causing havoc as the president of the U.S. but imagine how much worse it would be if he were to be named as the next pope. For most of us, it would be a true nightmare, but for people like Lindsey Graham it’s a dream come true.

Earlier this week Trump told reporters that he’d like to be pope. While it seemed like he was joking we all know that the president has a habit of joking about things that he’s seriously considering. So is there a real chance that Trump and his followers are trying to figure out how to get the no.1 spot in the Vatican?

Most of MAGA worship Trump like a religious icon while simultaneously hating on real Catholicism, just look at how Marjorie Taylor Greene responded to Pope Francis’ death last month. So there’s no doubt many of his allies would love to see him become the head of Catholicism. 

Lindsey Graham thinks a President Pope would have “upsides”

Responding to Trump’s comments on X, Senator Lindsey Graham wrote that he was “excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope.” He makes a genuine case for why Trump would make a great pope claiming that there would be many “upsides” and asks the papal conclave to keep an “open mind.”

The responses to Graham’s post were a mixture of outright horror and others pointing out that his statement was likely a joke. This might all seem funny to Graham but, like I said, many of Trump’s followers would probably this wholeheartedly. If they could find a genuine way to make Trump the pope they would do it. how Trump joked about a third term and now it’s a real possibility? Yeah.

Could Trump actually be pope?

Obviously not that man might actually be the antichrist. Aside from that Trump barely meets any of the requirements to actually become the pope. For starters, the pope must be Catholic (duh) Trump in non-denominational Christian so that instantly rules him out. The candidate for supreme pontiff must also be of sound mind, which again, would rule out the U.S. president.

These are just a couple of the compulsory expectations that Trump would fail to meet. There are other expectations that are more like soft requirements. For example, knowing Latin and Italian, (Trump barely knows English), conflict resolution, (Trump makes conflicts worse), wisdom and prudence, (don’t make me laugh). 

The reality is that Donald Trump is the absolute antithesis of what a pope should be. I guess in a way, Lindsey Graham’s statement is pretty funny, because imagining Trump trying to run the Vatican is so ridiculously stupid you can’t help but laugh.

Despite Marjorie Taylor Greene already duking it out for the title of Cruella de Vil, we really have to give credit where credit is due — fur coat or not, Ted Cruz’s strong chin leaves him the winner. Hi sweeties, say hello to Cruzella Deville. 

Now, we know what you’re thinking. Lindsey Graham already has her drag name. (Lady G, anyone?). But Lady G is now making her drag debut as the one and only Lady Graham Cracker. Look — amid all the fun and games — these aforementioned drag queens have dedicated their time to attacking the rights LGBTQ+ have worked so hard to achieve. Despite the overwhelming progress made in the last 10 years alone, America is not the land of the free for every LGBTQ person. 

Drag is currently under attack, and with it, freedom of expression. Anti-drag bills are sweeping the nation, with states like Tennessee and soon-to-be Flordia locking in its bigoted legitimation. Anti-trans legislation is also being cooked into these legislations and Republicans like the ones listed above have taken to their platforms to celebrate and promote it. 

For decades, drag queens have been on the front lines of justice, dating as far back as the Stonewall riots in 1969. Bigoted legislation or not, they will continue calling out hate as they see it. That’s part of what makes them so fabulous.

In a Twitter joke that didn’t land too well, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) tweeted that Donald Trump should “punch a cop” on his way to the DA’s office on Tuesday. It was more of a jibe aimed at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) approach to crime but it opened a door to a great deal of scrutiny.

By Tuesday, Trump will have left Mar-a-Lago to surrender himself in New York after becoming the first ex-president in history to be indicted on many charges that will remain unknown until he appears in court. He will not be handcuffed but other than that, the process will remain the same. He’ll be booked, a mugshot will be taken, and that will become fodder for a whole new round of memes.

Graham’s “advice” comes at the worst possible time and displays a tone-deaf attitude to the situation.

To give the joke some context, per the New York Post, “Since taking office on Jan. 1, Bragg has downgraded 52% of felony cases to misdemeanors — compared to 39% in all of 2019.” The article goes on to say, “When serious felony charges are brought, Bragg’s office wins a conviction just 51% of the time — down from 68% in 2019, the last year before the pandemic disrupted the court system.”

So, the right has been hammering Bragg for his soft-on-crime position but Graham’s joke isn’t hitting well at all. And while he did rush to explain how his tweet was meant to be an ironic comment, those in the comments are not in agreement.

This problematic “joke” not only conveys that Graham severely lacks the understanding to know what to not make fun of, but also establishes that he isn’t exactly a sensible Trump er as he just reminded everyone of the role Trump played in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots at a time when he is about to be prosecuted for another crime.

The U.S. House of Representatives continues to be in complete chaos as Republicans, after six rounds of voting, have still been unable to come together to place Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as the newly-elected House speaker. And despite legitimate national security concerns, the majority of liberals have been watching the spectacle unfold with a giant tub of popcorn.

After all, the Republicans opposing McCarthy’s vote are primarily of the ultra-far-right House Freedom Caucus, whom we have Donald Trump to thank for, as the former president empowered some of the party’s most extreme fringe candidates. And as Mark Ruffalo has pointed out, if only conservatives could have seen this coming when they quickly fell in line behind Trump in 2016!

Back when prominent Republicans were still opposing Trump’s candidacy, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) issued a stark warning to fellow of his party. “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed,” Graham tweeted on May 3, 2016. “And we will deserve it.”

Well, well, well. How the chickens have come home to roost. Not to mention, that Republicans also have themselves to blame for Trump in the first place by stoking the flames of divisiveness for years, paving the way for just such an extreme candidate.

“This keeps coming to mind as I watch the McCarthy immolation,” Ruffalo wrote, sharing Graham’s tweet on Thursday morning. “Lindsey Graham as soothsayer. How wildly cynical Lindsey was to jump on the Trump train. His prophecy is finally coming true.”

He’s not wrong. And that’s exactly what happens when you sell out any semblance of morality — not even taking the Jan. 6 insurrection into consideration, when frothed-up alt-right Trump ers literally stormed the U.S. Capitol and fixated on assassinating former Vice President Mike Pence. It’s no wonder why everyone from Jon Stewart to George Takei seems to be delighting in Republican disarray.
