The brilliant Lily Gladstone has recently shot to prominence with a string of outstanding performances on the big and small screens. Born on Aug. 2, 1986, in Kalispell, Montana, the 38-year-old actress has been active as a professional performer for over a decade but only became a household name in 2023.

That was thanks to her Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning performance as Mollie Burkhart, wife to Leonardo DiCaprio’s World War I veteran Ernest Burkhart, in Martin Scorsese’s epic Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon. Since then, much information about the talented star has been unearthed, including her many past roles.

Gladstone’s television career began in 2017, with a role as Carol Red Crow in the unaired pilot of the crime drama Scalped. She has since hosted the YouTube educational show Crash Course, appeared in two episodes of the anthology series Room 104, appeared in six episodes of the drama series Billions, had a voice role in one episode of the animated sitcom Tuca & Bertie, appeared in two episodes of the highly-acclaimed comedy-drama Reservation Dogs, and earned a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for her tremendous performance as Cam Bentland in the crime drama miniseries Under the Bridge.

On the big screen, her career started with a small role in the French drama Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian (2012). She has since appeared in the drama Winter in the Blood (2013), the drama Certain Women and the surrealist mystery Buster’s Mal Heart (both 2016), the survival drama Walking Out (2017), the drama First Cow (2019), the drama The Unknown Country, the hybrid animation-live action movie Quantum Cowbows, and the Western The Last Manhunt (all 2022), drama Fancy Dance and the above-mentioned Killers of the Flower Moon (both 2023), and, most recently, Jazzy (2024). She’s set to star in the rom-com The Wedding Banquet in 2025.

But fans still have questions about Gladstone, one of which relates to her ethnicity.

What is Lily Gladstone’s ethnicity?

While Lily Gladstone is very much an American, her ancestral heritage weaves a rich tapestry.

According to Town & Country, Gladstone’s mother is white, and her father is an eclectic mix of NiMíiPuu or Nez Perce and Siksikaitsitapi, also called Blackfeet. An archived page of The North Edinburgh News points out that, on her mother’s side, she is descended from the great-great-grandfather of a first cousin of the 19th century U.K. Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Another archived page, this time of The Guardian, on her father’s side, her great, great grandfather was Red Crow, a prominent treaty chief.

That all comes together to mean Gladstone’s ethnicity includes European, North American, and Pacific Northwest heritage — and we can only imagine her career is making the people from all those places incredibly proud of her.

Review: ‘Fancy Dance’ conducts a triumphant song of family and humanity around a limitless Lily Gladstone https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/reviews/review-fancy-dance-conducts-a-triumphant-song-of-family-and-humanity-around-a-limitless-lily-gladstone/ https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/reviews/review-fancy-dance-conducts-a-triumphant-song-of-family-and-humanity-around-a-limitless-lily-gladstone/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2024 23:28:39 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1716239 Isabel DeRoy-Olson is a revelation in Erica Tremblay's Indigenous drama.]]>

At the 2023 IndieWire Honors Awards Ceremony in December, Lily Gladstone was the recipient of the Performance Award for their work in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon as Mollie Burkhart.

In their acceptance speech, the actress was all too happy to honor the performance that they felt was “the absolute highlight of my career, the best work I feel like I’ve ever done, the most important story, elevating the awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women, missing and murdered sisters, working with the greatest, most visionary, most committed director of my life, working with somebody who I love very dearly and had the best chemistry I’ve had with somebody onscreen. The greatest love story that I’ve ever told in my career.”

But Lily Gladstone wasn’t talking about Flower Moon. They were talking about Fancy Dance, the narrative feature debut of Seneca-Cayuga filmmaker Erica Tremblay, known primarily for her documentary shorts Tiny Red Universe, Heartland: A Portrait of Survival, and In the Turn. At the time of the speech, Fancy Dance had not secured distribution of any kind. Apple TV Plus — which also distributed Scorsese’s film — acquired the rights to the film back in February. It released the film on streaming earlier today, and now that the wider world can see Fancy Dance for themselves, Gladstone’s words will ring as profoundly as ever.

Flower Moon flew on the wings of technical mastery, a juggernaut loaded with star power and prestige, but it harbored a perspective that — while good-intentioned — was ultimately not that of the Osage Nation, e.g., the very people it sought justice for. Fancy Dance, by contrast, doesn’t seem terribly interested in using its runtime to take colonialism to task. Maybe it doesn’t need to; colonial practices like those depicted in Flower Moon invite lacerating criticism, whatever their context. Instead, Fancy Dance operates with a softer but sharper authenticity, one that arises from a Native filmmaker who celebrates, and meditates on, a kaleidoscope’s-worth of emotion and experience in every line, frame, and story beat.

The film stars Gladstone as Jax, a Seneca-Cayuga woman who lives on the reservation with her niece, Roki (Isabel DeRoy-Olson). Roki’s mother and Jax’s sister, Tawi, has ed the seemingly endless ranks of missing and murdered Indigenous women. We watch as Jax juggles preparations for an powwow while providing for Roki, and searching for her sister. When S intervenes and threatens to take Roki from the reservation and place her with her white father, Frank (Shea Whigham), Jax and Roki take off on an impromptu road trip in search of Tawi, whom they hope to find in time for the powwow, and so that Roki can stay with her Indigenous family.

Right from the opening scene, it’s evident where Fancy Dance stands; in the wake of colonial fallout whose immensity is matched only by the immovability of Indigenous spirit. It’s unapologetic about the realities of missing and murdered Indigenous women, but it doesn’t want you to feel bad — or more precisely, not to feel bad as a punishment, but because that feeling might be a stepping stone; one that will hopefully lead to seeing — really seeing — the damage that so many institutions continue to wreak on the lives of Native people.

Under colonial parameters, Indigenous people are backed into a corner in which they must survive, but are subsequently punished for trying to survive. In Fancy Dance, this manifests most severely in S trying to take Roki away from Jax, and in the wedge that’s later driven between Jax and Roki because of the circumstances that they’re being forced into. In these circumstances, family and tribal bonds of togetherness are dissolved by force, which is tremendously harmful to individual Native people, and Indigenous cultures as a whole.

The chief emotion that Fancy Dance evokes, however, is hope. It expresses anger towards brutal, systemic, ongoing colonialism and the people who perpetuate it, to be sure, but a more prevalent element is the way its plot encourages us to think about how things could have been different, had settlers learned from Indigenous people, rather than attempting to wipe out their cultures altogether. This, in turn, encourages viewers to think about how they could incorporate Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into their lives now.

It’s through the young DeRoy-Olson that Fancy Dance demonstrates this — the Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing — most effectively. As she tries to explain the meaning of powwows to her white step-grandmother Nancy (Audrey Wasilewski), Roki’s body language is a revelation; she may not explain that meaning verbally, because that meaning is not meant to be explained through words. That Nancy thought of powwows as more or less equivalent to ballet lessons is just one of the many ways in which Fancy Dance examines the gulf that still exists between Native and non-Native thinking, and it’s all done with an abundance of internal and external grace at the hands of Tremblay. To think that this is the writer-director’s first narrative feature boggles the mind.

And speaking of DeRoy-Olson — and, prior to that, of hope — the young actress positively flourishes as Roki. There’s a certain maturity that she balances with her youth; she’s able to evoke Roki’s narrative purpose as a character, while still making her believable. This alone is impressive, but she also portrays adolescent rawness and vulnerability enough for us to recognize that Roki —and the culture she represents — must be cherished and nurtured unwaveringly, now more than ever. DeRoy-Olson is worthy of the exact commendation that Lily Gladstone bestowed upon her in her IndieWire speech, and she’s riveting to watch.

That, dear readers, brings us back to Lily Gladstone, whose screen presence defies explanation. As Jax, Gladstone is both mountain and climber, necessarily vulnerable and fluidly determined, flawed and uncompromising, capable of great pain and greater laughter. To love Jax, and to love Gladstone, is to love love itself. The utter justice that Gladstone metes out to Jax, Fancy Dance, and the world around them is an honor to behold.

There should be no question that Indigenous stories need to be told by Indigenous voices. Scorsese can show us Osage blood on white hands, which may do wonders for the specific discomfort that white folks can and should feel about Native American history, but Fancy Dance — an Indigenous story, primarily about Indigenous people, told primarily by Indigenous artists — is interested in pure love, and pure love just happens to run counter to the world that was forced upon Indigenous people long (but not too long) ago. That power is immaculate in every scene.

So thank you Gladstone, thank you DeRoy-Olson, and thank you Tremblay for what you stand for; it is universal, and it is essential.

In our Hollywood-obsessed culture, it’s hard to go about your day without being made aware of some innocuous celebrity tidbit, even if you actively try to avoid such details.

Whether it’s Bob Odenkirk’s relationship to King Charles or Selena Gomez’ much-theorised lip-reading at the Golden Globes, we’re collectively subject to minute details about the lives of celebrities — whether we like it or not. The microscope pointed on celebrities also extends to their relationship status.

While we know the ins and outs of starry couples like Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner or Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater, the case for Killers of The Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone is a little less clear. The Oscar-nominee is a bonafide rarity in that her relationship status is largely secreted from the public, so who exactly is Lily Gladstone’s husband?

Who is Lily Gladstone’s husband?

Despite being in the industry for decades, Lily Gladstone has managed to keep her love life largely under wraps. While the actor has yet to publicly confirm her relationship status, her social media feeds are devoid of a partner, suggesting that Gladstone (might) be single. Gladstone tends to steer clear of topics about her relationships and sexuality in interviews, but she did reveal in 2023 that she goes by she/they pronouns.

The actor, who is of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu descent, told People that since most Native languages are not gendered, her “pronoun use is partly a way of decolonizing gender for myself.” While Gladstone might remain tight-lipped about her current relationship status, she has been open about her former flames. In 2023, the First Cow star revealed that her highschool sweetheart had gifted her with a pair of children’s sunglasses, and vowed for her to one day wear them to the Academy Awards.

Gladstone’s then-boyfriend won the gift — which she described as “little tiny kids’ glasses” — at an arcade, and told the actor to “‘keep these and you have to wear them to the Academy Awards.’” Gladstone revealed that she still has the sunglasses, though they weren’t spotted when she attended the Oscars earlier this month.

The privacy around Gladstone’s marital status also extends to her immediate family. As far as we know, the 37-year-old actor does not have any children, but she is open about being a proud dog parent to adorable black labrador, Birdy.

As Gladstone’s star continues to rise, with a Golden Globe and SAG Award under her belt, maybe she will let slip a few details about her personal life soon. But in the meantime, we just hope she continues to make great films.

The Oscars might just be simple movie awards for some, but they are monumental achievements for others. Even with the decrease in public interest, they’re still among the most prestigious awards one could ever win.

From under-represented communities breaking ground with the Academy to movie legends cementing their place among the all-time greats, the 96th Academy Awards achieved all kinds of records, even if some opportunities were controversially missed. One thing is for sure, though: history was made on March 10

Milestone wins

Cillian Murphy wins the Oscar for Best Actor

The Irish have been dominating the entertainment industry in the past few years. Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Barry Keoghan, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Ruth Negga, Fiona Shaw, and, of course, Cillian Murphy — the world of movies and television owes a great debt of gratitude to the great nation of Ireland. And yet, never has an Irish-born person won an Oscar for Best Actor. Until now.

I know what you’re thinking — what about one of the greatest actors of all time and three-time Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis? Well, DDL does indeed have British-Irish citizenship, but he was born in London. Murphy led the race after securing the SAG award in February, and sure enough his Best Actor win serves as a fitting climax to the Hollywood Irish renaissance of the 2020s.

Justine Triet wins the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay

Anatomy of a Fall Nation was holding out hope Justine Triet would win at least one Oscar on Sunday (I know this because I, too, am part of it). Despite her film taking Cannes and the world by storm this past year, Triet unfortunately wasn’t the favorite to win in either of the categories she was up for; Best Original Screenplay (she co-wrote Anatomy of a Fall with her partner Arthur Harari) and Best Director.

And yet, against all the odds, a miracle struck on Sunday and Triet came away with the Best Original Screenplay gong. This means she is the first French woman to win in that category. Due to Christopher Nolan beating her to Best Director, though, it’s still a fact that only three women have won the Oscar for Best Director in the past (Kathryn Bigelow, 2010; Chloé Zhao, 2021; Jane Campion, 2022).

The Zone of Interest wins the Oscar for Best International Film

The Best International Feature Film category was a funny one this year. Anatomy of a Fall, a French movie nominated in almost every big category, was not ’s submission for the bracket. Perfect Days is a Japanese film made by a German man, and Italy’s submission, Io Capitano, barely has a lick of Italian in its two-hour runtime.

Similarly, The Zone of Interest, spoken entirely in German and set in Poland, is a British film. As a result, the Oscar winner stands as the UK’s first-ever win in the Best International Film category. The space is reserved for movies spoken not in the English language. The UK’s previous nominees in the category were for films with Welsh dialogue.

Missed milestone wins

Lily Gladstone winning the Oscar for Best Actress

Lily Gladstone has already made history by becoming the first Native American person to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress (three other, non-American, Indigenous women have been nominated before — Merle Oberon, Keisha Castle-Hughes, and Yalitza Aparicio). They also became the first Native American/Indigenous winner of the SAG Award in the same category, sending them well on their way to repeating the feat at the Oscars.

Gladstone’s arresting performance as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon would’ve granted the actress her first career Oscar and made her the first Indigenous woman to win for an acting performance and the first Native American Oscar winner ever. Of course, this didn’t end up happening as Emma Stone took the gong for the second time for Poor Things. Likewise Osage Nation songwriter Scott George, and the author of Best Original Song contender “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People),” would’ve made history if he won as the first Native American man to be nominated in this category. However, Billie Eilish topped the category for Barbie‘s “What Was I Made For">Photo by Frank Micelotta/Getty Images

Of course, when you talk about Marty, you have to talk about Thelma. Possibly the greatest director-editor duo of all time, Scorsese’s film very nearly gave Thelma Schoonmaker a chance at making history too. The editor almost finally broke out of the four-way tie she’s been in since she won the Oscar for Best Editing for The Departed in 2007, bringing her total to three trophies (she had previously won for The Aviator and Raging Bull). Michael Kahn, Daniel Mandell, and Ralph Dawson all have three Oscars for Best Editing as well.

As it was, Schoonmaker lost out to Jennifer Lame for Oppenheimer, as predicted. Nevertheless, the turn of events shouldn’t be too sore for Schoonmaker as she remains the single most nominated person in the category with nine nods over the years — all but one for collaborations with Scorsese.

Lily Gladstone’s Oscar-nominated role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon has been hailed as one of the greatest performances of the year. Based on a true historical event, Burkhart was a central figure in what was referred to as the Osage Indian Murders or the Reign of Terror, a genocide against citizens of the Osage Nation from 1921-1926, in which at least 60 of Burkhart’s family were killed.

Lily Gladstone may be relatively unknown to many moviegoers who loved her scene-stealing performance. But the Native American actress, who is of the Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce Nations, has several high-profile credits to her name, including Reservation Dogs.

Killers of the Flower Moon is a captivating and poignant portrayal of the historical murders that plagued the Osage Nation.

Under the direction of Martin Scorsese and inspired by David Grann’s 2017 publication, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the narrative unfolds around the experiences of Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a World War I veteran. He is persuaded by his cattle-farming uncle, William “King” Hale (portrayed by Robert De Niro), to marry Mollie Kyle (depicted by Lily Gladstone), a wealthy member of the Osage Nation, in an effort to gain control of her family’s substantial oil wealth.

Following the discovery of oil reserves on their territory, of the Osage Nation experienced a significant rise in their socioeconomic status, ultimately attaining considerable wealth that positioned them among the most affluent individuals on a global scale. However, in the 1920s, a series of enigmatic illnesses and homicides, which also impacted Mollie’s siblings, enveloped this era with a somber ambiance, commonly known as the Reign of Terror.

What’s the ending of Killers of the Flower Moon?

As the movie goes on, it becomes clear that Ernest, along with his uncle and brother, is masterminding the attacks and using their influence to coerce other settlers into carrying out their nefarious schemes. As Killers of the Flower Moon comes to a close, the FBI is hot on Ernest and Hale’s trail for their roles in the murders of Osage people.

To protect himself and his loved ones, Burkhart is willing to testify against Hale. His personal reputation is destroyed, and he is unable or unwilling to tell his wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone) what kind of poison he has been giving her over the years. Early on in the film, we learn that Mollie has diabetes so severe that she needs to undergo unproven insulin therapies.

Mollie’s persistent illness and subtle poisoning are the result of a request from Hale and the local doctors for Ernest to mix the insulin with a drug they haven’t disclosed. In the final scene of the film, before cutting to a radio broadcast, Mollie asks Ernest what exactly is in the injections. After Ernest’s dismissive response, “It’s just insulin,” Mollie packed up the kids and left, eventually getting a divorce and starting a new life on her own. Ernest is subsequently given a life sentence, but is eventually granted parole as a result of his testimony.

Whatever happened to Ernest Burkhart at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon?

Ernest Burkhart could have avoided jail time, but instead he was doomed to spend the rest of his life on the outs with his family. In the confines of the jail scene, the film offers Burkhart a chance at redemption, but it never follows through with this promise. Scorsese made it clear that there are no “heroes” in this story; instead, everyone must deal with the repercussions of their actions. As Killers of the Flower Moon is now playing in theaters, its ending has sparked a variety of interpretations, allowing viewers to form their own opinions about Scorsese’s intended message.

Why is the last scene so different from the rest of the movie in Killers of the Flower Moon?

In the final scene, a white cast plays the Osage story for a radio drama audience, complete with applause and a full complement of Foley sound effects. Tom White (Jesse Plemons), a minor character in the film, plays the hero in this version of the story, and the villains are easily defeated. It provides a satisfying conclusion to one of the last gripping sagas of the Wild West, but it has little in common with the complex and unsettling events we have seen unfold. The FBI and the government tried to cover up a lot of the Osage murders so that it looked like the investigation was a huge success, but underneath the surface was a much deeper and more sinister conspiracy that they never got to the bottom of. Which brings us to Scorsese’s very apparent cameo.

At the end of David Grann’s nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon, the FBI is shown to have used the case for publicity purposes by having agents appear in an episode of the 1930s radio drama series The Lucky Strike Hour. Two decades later, J. Edgar Hoover appeared in The FBI Story, directed by Jimmy Stewart, in which he briefly reenacted the Osage case to boost the FBI’s reputation. As if going through time, Scorsese’s film adaptation of Grann’s book features a remarkable conclusion that is based on the radio drama set in the 1930s, which was written ten years after the murders.

Does Martin Scorsese make a cameo at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon?

When Scorsese himself appears on screen, he does so in a manner that defies the film’s realism by stepping onto the stage and into the spotlight. Taking on the persona of the radio drama’s narrator, he recounts the events that happened to Mollie (the story’s protagonist) after The Lucky Strike Hour cut them out. Scorsese describes the final years of her life and her death in 1937. The film’s final lines are a recounting of his of Mollie’s obituary: “There was no mention of the murders.” And like that, Scorses takes ownership of the horrific Osage story, and sets the truth free for all to observe and absorb.

The finale of Killers of the Flower Moon is a breathtaking above shot of a modern Osage gathering. The dancers form a continuous, colorful circle, which represents their strong sense of community. After Scorsese deservedly turns in the spotlight, the story is rightfully given back to the Osage people.

One of the most memorable performances in Killers of the Flower Moon was Lily Gladstone’s role as Mollie Burkhart. She had her fair share of emotional scenes with talks of an Oscar already, she was perfectly cast opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who played her onscreen husband. Speaking of, do we know if Gladstone has a husband in real life?

Normally a quick search would give an answer, but it seems that Gladstone likes to keep her personal life private. She does use social media, including Instagram and X, although there is nothing on either of those that would confirm whether or not she has a partner.

She mostly shares posts relating to her acting, and more recently she’s been sharing a lot about the SAG-AFTRA strikes, but details about her personal life are noticeably absent, which is probably a wise choice; not every celebrity likes to have their private life made public.

There aren’t even any records of past relationships, although there is speculation that she is currently single, but nothing can be stated with certainty. The truth is she’s still a relatively new face to mainstream audiences, despite acting in films for about a decade now, her off-screen existence has so far been able to fly under the radar.

Killers of the Flower Moon was a breakout role for Gladstone, so maybe now that the mainstream media are paying more attention, she may be inclined to share aspects of her personal life. Then again, maybe not. It’s her life, and if she doesn’t want anyone knowing her business, then that’s her choice to make.

Killers of the Flower Moon has finally graced the big screen after a culmination of anticipation of a decade. While some may find its runtime to be on the longer side, we ought to recognize that the significance of this cinematic masterpiece far transcends its duration. Directed by the brilliant Martin Scorsese, this film stands as his magnum opus, featuring his greatest muses: Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Cinema is back with a message more potent than ever, coinciding with the retelling of a story more heartbreaking than many of us could have ever imagined. The feature-length film closely follows the events outlined in David Grann’s book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. While the credits explicitly state that the story is based on the book, a lingering question persists after we exit the theatre: was it, or was it not, also based on a real story?

Did the Osage Nation massacre really happen?

As we watch the almost four-hour-long feature film, it seems that time comes to a standstill. Not because the film is excessively lengthy – it isn’t – but because the atrocities unfolding on screen compel us to pause and truly contemplate these harrowing events. When the film draws to a close, with Scorcese making a featured appearance to discuss Mollie Burkhart’s final days, the realization hits us: this story may indeed be based on actual events. And it is.

The Osage Nation, of course, has long been aware of the horrific mass murders that occurred over a century ago. However, for many of us who have been fortunate enough to lead lives unaware of these events, such a tragedy went completely unnoticed by our very own history books. But they are undeniably real and Grann’s book meticulously portrays these precise details.

At the heart of these narratives lies the tragedy that befell the Osage Nation in early 20th-century Oklahoma, following the discovery of oil on their reservation. This revelation prompted many white American settlers to conspire in tapping into the wealth of the oil-rich lands by plotting to murder the Osage.

These events were further facilitated by the federal government and a systemic erasure that resulted in the dispossession of the Osage from their land, and the terrorization of families who held the rights to the profits. This became known as the “Reign of Terror.”

Did Ernest and Mollie Burkhart exist in real life?

In Killers of the Flower Moon, we witness these tragic events unfold before us, from the perspectives of both the oppressor (the Hale family tree) and the oppressed (the entire Osage community). Mollie (portrayed by Lily Gladstone) and Ernest (played by DiCaprio) were real individuals, and their story is portrayed with remarkable accuracy in the film, along with the experiences of Mollie’s entire family. The couple fell in love and went on to have three children together.

Mollie’s life, marked by more loss than anyone should bear in a lifetime, invites the audience to grieve alongside her and grieve we did. It isn’t until the very last moments of the film that we learn she ed away in 1937, having found happiness in marriage, though not with Ernest, ultimately succumbing to diabetes at the age of 50. Ernest was sentenced to life in prison but received two pardons. He returned to Oklahoma, where he lived with his brother until his ing in 1986, at the age of 94.

Byron and his uncle, the mastermind William King Hale, were also very real. Throughout the film, we find ourselves oscillating regarding his stance, as he is portrayed praising the Osage while paradoxically orchestrating their deaths to seize their fortune and satisfy his insatiable greed. Hale, in reality, was a cattleman who held partial ownership of a bank, grocery store, and funeral home in Fairfax, all alongside his fraudulent schemes and murderous plots that culminated in the Osage Indian Murders of the 1920s.

Ultimately, all of the events in the story and all the characters were based on the Osage Nation Massacre that occurred 100 years ago in Oklahoma. Their story lives on through the lives of the 21,000 , half of whom still reside in Oklahoma, and had their story told through Killers of the Flower Moon, currently in theatres.

Legendary director Martin Scorsese‘s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, officially hits theatres on Oct. 20, 2023. Based on David Grann’s nonfiction novel of the same name, the flick tells the story of the Osage, an Oklahoman tribe wealthy from oil money, and the Hale-Burkhart family that murdered their way into the fortune. William Hale (Robert Di Nero) convinces his nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) to marry the incredibly wealthy and sickly Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), the single daughter of a wealthy Osage family.

The historical drama is being praised for shining a light on a story that many Americans had yet to hear (thanks, public school system!), though of the Osage tribe, and many others, question Scorsese’s choice to focus on the verifiable villains of the story, rather than the victims. With a star-studded cast, a true crime premise, and a budget that rivals any Marvel production the 3.5-hour is all but guaranteed a spot at the Oscars, even if it struggles to outperform Taylor Swift’s cinematic version of her Eras Tour.

Does Killers of the Flower Moon have a post-credits scene?

Since Killers of the Flower Moon is a historical drama, a post-credits scene is largely unnecessary. Without a possible second installment, there is no need to tease audiences with the possibility of more. Scorsese has been a vocal opponent of the world of superhero flicks like The Avengers, which largely popularized the post-credit scene. While there was plenty more to the story after the fledgling FBI cracked the case, Scorsese’s film will wrap before the credits roll.

Even at 80 years old, Martin Scorsese shows no signs of tempering what can only be described at this point as a manic compulsion to tell stories. The iconic purveyor of fast violence, unlawful bravado, and toxic protagonists will release his 27th narrative film this year, entitled Killers of the Flower Moon. The film is produced by Apple TV Plus, with distribution backing by Paramount.

The film centers on a series of murders in Oklahoma’s Osage Nation during the 1920s, after oil is discovered on tribal land. The spree prompts a major federal investigation directed by a young J. Edgar Hoover and a former Texas Ranger.

Although Leonardo DiCaprio was initially brought on to play the former Ranger, he instead secured the role of Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of the film’s primary antagonist (played by Robert DeNiro). Eventually, Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) snagged the role of the former Ranger, Tom White. And yet: early reviews say the real star of the show is Lily Gladstone (Reservation Dogs, Billions), an American actor of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu heritage.

Gladstone portrays an Osage woman, Mollie, who begins a romantic relationship with DiCaprio’s character, despite struggling with suspicions that the murders are being committed to further white profits. Check out the trailer below:

How is Killers of the Flower Moon being released?

Until recently, the film was set to open in select theaters on Oct. 6 of this year, before later opening across the U.S. on Oct. 20. However, per The Hollywood Reporter, Apple has decided to simply let the film open wide on Oct. 20, without the short stint in select theaters beforehand.

It will release on Apple TV Plus sometime after its theatrical window, which is unknown at this point but will apparently be pre-pandemic in its measure. So look for the movie to hit streaming a few months after it premieres in theaters — but before the Oscars in early March 2024.

Why is Apple doubling down on a nationwide opening? Look at the box office numbers: Oppenheimer is still breaking records left and right for a three-hour, R-rated feature. Guess what else is three hours and R-rated? A Martin Scorcese movie!

Of course, Killers of the Flower Moon won’t have a Barbie-related meme to propel it into the zeitgeist, so we’re not sure how realistic it is to hope that Scorsese’s latest opus will Oppy in the $700 Million Club. But wouldn’t be terrific if it did?

That would underline the message that Barbie and Oppenheimer are currently sending to studio executives: that audiences crave smart, original material that doesn’t disappear from theaters after a 30- or 45-day theatrical window. We are now officially waiting for streaming to catch all the green-screen movies. Give us the next great American epic, or no popcorn sales for you.

It would be beautiful if the very director who said Marvel movies aren’t cinema actually helped wrestle the box office away from the clutches of CG-augmented bad guys for good. If not, we hope it at least makes enough money to prove that these types of stories can still turn a profit.

Lily Gladstone is already an early Oscars contender despite not saying a word in new ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ teaser https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/movies/lily-gladstone-already-an-early-oscars-contender-despite-not-saying-word-killers-flower-moon-teaser/ Thu, 18 May 2023 15:23:18 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.isosite.org/?p=1494546 Can you find the biggest star in this picture? ]]>

If all goes well, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon film will finally be seen by the public this October before a later streaming release. Marketing is starting to kick off, and, with a new teaser circulating, buzz is building for silent Lily Gladstone.

The Reservation Dogs and Billions actress appears in the above trailer for the film based on a true story alongside co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. In the piece, she plays the real person who was the wife of the real person DiCaprio is playing and, despite the footage just featuring DiCaprio’s voice, fans are already demanding more prominence for her after the project gets out to cinemas.

For those who have not read the book the film is based on or followed the true events, Gladstone’s Mollie Burkhart is one of the key characters involved in the whole sordid story. She endured incredible pain, saw many of her loved ones die, was betrayed by several people and, with all this to act out of, another fan of Gladstone says she should be prepped for Best Actress right now.

Of course, any actor or actress who is not white getting an Oscar is still a tall order today (only one Indigenous American, Buffy Sainte-Marie, walked away with a statue for a musical composition in 1982, and she had to share it). This said, people who believe in Gladstone are still not being dissuaded about her chances, and later in the discourse, a different person who believes in her says if she is not invited to the next Academy Awards ceremony the film is eligible for, they should be destroyed in an act of vengeance.

Killers of the Flower Moon opens Oct. 6 in select theaters before a wider release Oct. 20. In addition to DiCaprio and Gladstone, the work also features Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and musician Jack White in a role as well. The film is going to be very long, and, while some adaptations leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who create the source material they work from, it sounds like this will not be the case here as David Grann says they worked hard to do it justice. The film was shot on location, the Osage Nation was involved, and several of the tribe are even getting to act in the movie.
