The Avengers? They have Nick Fury for guidance. But Madame Web? It was clear that Hannibal — Mads Mikkelsen’s version, to be precise — was pulling the strings all along. 5sw1u

Don’t start judging me and no, my brain cells didn’t collectively combust after watching the 2-hour long film that probably exists in its own pocket dimension because making sense of it in any reality proves to be a tough task. Instead, I had a grand epiphany…

Well, it all goes back to the very first episode of NBC’s Hannibal season 1, where Will Graham, an FBI profiler with the ability to assume the mindset of any killer and figure out their “design” — why they kill, where they kill, and what they plan to do next. But, in his very first case with the bureau, Will was having difficulty differentiating the popularly-dubbed Minnesota Shrike from the garden variety serial killer, so Hannibal, being the kind-hearted cannibal he was (and beyond invested in FBI’s “psychic” profiler), went ahead and killed a girl in the exact same fashion as the Shrike, but adopted a completely different method of presenting the body.

The result? Will managed to correctly diagnose the Shrike’s MO and his next move. How? In the words of Will, the copycat killer made it possible for him to see the whole picture:

“It’s like he had to show me a negative so that I could see a positive.”

Eh, morbid, yes. But effective. It worked for Will, and it definitely works for me and every disgruntled MCU fan out there.

The MCU should thank Sony Pictures for Madame Web 4y6j6w

Yes, yes, Marvel Studios went all batsh*t crazy with all the announcements — Fantastic Four’s cast, and X-Men 97’s trailer — just as Madame Web released, in order to a) set itself apart from Sony’s downright embarrassing adaptation of the Spider-Man universe, and b) to cash-in on all the disappointment Cassie Webb and team managed to generate, and drumming up even more hype for its most-awaited projects.

But Madame Web isn’t just profitable — the only scenario in which the word can be applied to the film — for MCU’s future, as it also fixes its latest mistakes…

…or at least allows us to see that they were not as bad as we believed them to be. I mean, seriously, Jane Foster yelling “Well then if it’s color we need, let’s bring the rainbow!” in Thor: Love and Thunder was cringey, but it doesn’t stand a chance against Madame Web’s embarrassing attempt at foreshadowing Ben Parker’s future death, where Cassie’s first scene with a young Ben includes this dialogue — made even more unnerving and tasteless with Johnson’s robotic line-delivery:

“What, you don’t wanna get shot in Queens?”

…A true “masterpiece,” isn’t it? Don’t even get me started on the pathetic attempts at connecting to Spider-Man as much as possible — “he keeps leaping around in there” — the terrible CGI, the poor line-dubbing, the fact that the superhero costumes — featured so prominently in the trailers — barely make an appearance, or how the supposed-to-be riveting final battle just kept spoiling itself.

Sure, we consistently fret about the MCU’s standards: We laid out The Marvels’ myriad failures (yep, guilty as charged); how Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t debut Marvel’s new villain properly; and that Love and Thunder, along with The Eternals, is the epitome of the worst the studio could offer. But now? It is impossible not to see the positive side of the MCU ledger now, when Sony is busy providing “disappointing and terrible” a new definition.

The Captain Marvel sequel had its funny moments and debuted a great trio, even if they didn’t get to cement their exemplary teamwork with a good plot. The same goes for Jennifer Walters as She-Hulk. Ant-Man 3 looks like Endgame now and Thor 4… well, I am ready to at least consider forgiving Taika Waititi. But what’s better is, amidst all the mistakes the MCU has been making, its better moments were being neglected — WandaVision, Moon Knight, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, What If…?, Werewolf by Night, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Loki, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

It is like Sony, of course inadvertently, keeps delivering MCU fans the negatives to open their eyes to the fact that given Marvel Studio’s drive to give us something different after Endgame, it has been taking risks and going against successful formulas to give us something new. I don’t know about you, but the imaginary Will Graham in my head surely acknowledges that the MCU does deserve several pats on the back.

FYI there are a LOT of series about the FBI. ]]>
<![CDATA[

Nobody can outrun the cultural reach of the FBI.

A shorthand for the real deal when it comes to catching criminals (and stalking and harassing civil rights leaders) the agency has inspired a raft of content, from countless police procedural novels to an endless stream of television shows and films.

Among all the gritty, inspired by real-life yet entirely generic stories (and blatant copaganda) there are plenty of great series’ about the Bureau, which show its agents as rounded characters who make mistakes and get put in extreme situations. If you love a good crime case or want some more action in your daily viewing, then read ahead for our list of the 10 best TV shows about the FBI!

Criminal Minds 1j3720

After a slow start, this CBS police procedural hit a high note with its fifth season. That gripping, brilliant collection of episodes was followed by more addictive television, and as a result the show is still on the air today, and has also launched a whole host of franchises.

The original Criminal Minds takes us into the world of FBI criminal profilers, who work in its Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), utilizing their training to profile potential perpetrators based on the nature of their crime. Some story arcs last a single episode, whereas some span seasons, but the main gist is that our team of overworked, cynical profilers are always searching for an unsub (unknown subject), and we see how that affects both their personal and professional lives.

Hannibal 5a5054

Looking at the title of this show, a potential viewer might think the series would be focusing on the horrific eponymous character and his gruesome exploits. However, Hannibal mostly follows the FBI special investigator who comes into the murderous forensic psychologist’s life, and their ensuing cat-and-mouse relationship. With brilliant displays from its leads, who manage to give complex yet emotionally astute performances, it consistently achieved great critical reviews (the third season, despite being cancelled for low ratings, was truly phenomenal). Also, it has Gillian Anderson in it, which is always a plus.

The Blacklist 6k6uj

This James Spader vehicle is a compelling premise, excellently pulled off. In The Blacklist, Spader plays Raymond “Red” Reddington, a former US Naval intelligence officer who turned it all in for a life of crime, quickly becoming one of the most wanted people in America. After years of avoiding capture, Red voluntarily surrenders at the Hoover Building and tells agents that for immunity, he’s willing to help them catch a number of other high-profile criminals using a “blacklist” of their information that he’s compiled over the years.

However, there’s a catch: he’ll only work with rookie agent and criminal profiler Elizabeth Keen, someone he apparently has no connection to. With ten seasons of quality programming, this mystery thriller has been a critical and commercial hit.

Twin Peaks 3nr1u

So, we might be stretching the definition of “about the FBI” here, but the David Lynch mystery/horror/soap opera/comedy/everything in between is so unique and iconic that it needs to be on the list. And, after all, the main character does work for the FBI.

Twin Peaks follows special agent Dale Cooper as he’s sent to the town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of a local teenage girl named Laura Palmer. What then follows is some truly bizarre yet compulsively gripping television, as mystery melds with unreality to create a world like no other. There’s a reason this series spans several seasons, films, and even books: it’s one of a kind.

White Collar 2z33m

White Collar has a familiar premise, but the relationships between its characters is what makes it tick. The series follows Neal Caffrey, one of the finest con artists and thieves in the States, just after he’s captured thanks to a three-year investigation by special agent Peter Burke. Caffrey, despite nearing the end of a long sentence, decides to try and escape prison, but is easily recaptured. However, this time, Caffrey offers Burke a deal: he’ll become an FBI consultant and snitch, but only if he’s allowed out of prison.

Quantico 2w371

While much of this show’s action takes place outside the bounds of the FBI, the agency is intrinsically bound to its story and characters. Quantico follows Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra), a former FBI agent who has become the prime suspect in an investigation into a terrorist attack on Grand Central Station.

In several flashback sequences, we see Parrish and her peers training at the FBI academy in Quantico, where we learn more about her past and how she ended up on the run. This thrilling mystery series is defined by its fast pace and great cast, fronted by Chopra, the first South Asian to lead an American network drama. So, if you’re after something that will have you clicking “play next,” then this is the series for you.

The F.B.I 2w5n5a

An American classic, this show first aired in 1965 and ran for nine successful seasons. While the show itself is a great example of how simple mysteries can sometimes be the best ones, it was also hated by the agency it was about. J. Edgar Hoover attempted to cancel the show multiple times, and every episode was vetted by his underling, Clyde Tolson, who also looked into actors as he wanted to make sure no “criminals, subversives, or Communists” were associated with the agency.

The series was also based on real cases, and some episodes even ended with a segment that showed viewers the real most wanted people in the country at that time, blurring the line between the agency and the show portraying it.

Bones 5o1p29

Blending comedy and crime isn’t always easy, but Bones does it brilliantly. The show is about a forensic anthropologist named Temperance “Bones” Brennan and an FBI special agent named Seeley Booth, and their relationship is a huge aspect of what makes the show so popular.

Brennan’s team at the fictional Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab collaborates with the FBI, utilizing new scientific tools to try and solve crimes. Brennan and Booth have a great will-they, won’t-they storyline that’s enhanced by some excellent chemistry. A little lighter than other entries on this list, but still dark in parts, and always bingeable.

Mindhunter 41j3k

Criminal profilers are fertile ground for screenwriters, and this show uses that to full effect. Set in the seventies, just as criminal profiling was coming into its own, Mindhunter follows three main characters: FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, and the psychologist Wendy Carr. The series begins as they launch a project to interview convicted and incarcerated serial killers in an attempt to better understand their psychology, in the hope that they can use the information to solve current cases. Fantastic characterization, stunning visuals, and brilliant performances turn this into a must-watch series.

The X-Files 4s4h4a

Mulder and Scully might just be the two most famous fictional FBI agents of all time thanks to the truly iconic nature of The X-Files. The show follows the two special agents as they investigate the “X-Files,” unsolved cases that allegedly involve paranormal or extraterrestrial phenomena.

Scully is the rational doctor, who has to analyze Mulder’s discoveries, whereas Mulder is a criminal profiler who believes in the beyond. The odd-couple pair soon learn they can only trust each other, even as the world around them becomes crazier and crazier. The X-Files isn’t just a great show about the FBI, but probably one of the best things to come out of the nineties in general.

FBI: Most Wanted 5a1319

This high octane CBS series follows a group of agents who track down those on the infamous FBI most-wanted list. Originally a spin-off of Dick Wolf’s FBI, it has gained a devoted fanbase over its run, and when you watch an episode it’s easy to see why. Compelling plots, incredible characters, and plenty of action keeps viewers glued, even if it sometimes strains believability.

The Americans 60x2u

The bureau might not be the main focus of this show, but they play a vital part in it, so we think it belongs on this list. Plus, The Americans is just such great television, it’s well worth watching in general.

The series follows the Jennings’, a seemingly normal American family who live in a Virginia suburb of D.C. However, the parents Elizabeth and Philip are undercover KGB spies. Their neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) plays an FBI counterintelligence agent, and we get a lot of insight into his role at the agency during the show’s run.

Fringe 494i20

This spiritual successor to The X-FIles gained a cult following during its run, and falls under the category of shows that may have been ahead of their time. It follows a group of agents who look into fringe scientific theories, and includes elements of the paranormal and supernatural, as well as a mythology that’s as well built out as Game of Thrones. A must-watch for those who like genre-bending shows.

Manhunt (2017) 1n4b2r

This anthology series portrays a pair of the most interesting and infamous FBI cases of all time in its two seasons: the search for the Unabomber and the attempt to find the man behind the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing in Atlanta.

Brilliant performances, cinematography, and plotting make both seasons incredibly bingeable. The only problem with this series is that there’s so little of it!

FBI 3d6n3f

It might have the least imaginative name on this list, but Dick Wolf’s FBI is anything but generic. Episodes have wide-ranging plots that will glue you to the screen, and each member of the ensemble cast brings something special to their characters. There’s a reason the series spawned so many spin-offs, after all.

<![CDATA[

Spooky season is all well and good. Seeing the kids dressed up is a hoot, we all love watching that building that used to be a Staples get turned into a Spirit Halloween for six weeks before transforming back into an empty room where raccoons make love for the rest of the year, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good horror series, especially with so many new ones arriving each fall.

But we’re getting older, and time is a commodity we can’t afford to waste watching some wide-eyed college student with a flashlight tiptoe through a murder dungeon at a snail’s pace like she’s getting paid by the hour. We need our spookiness fast and effective. Here’s a spread of drive-thru options for the discerning horror fan on the go.

Dracula 55o1t

Three episodes. That’s the whole thing. It takes three episodes to tell the reimagined version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in the Netflix/BBC adaptation written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Like the duo’s Sherlock series, the episodes are all feature length, but they got down smooth, provided you’re a weirdo.

2020’s Dracula goes big right out of the gate, half clinging to the source material in a way that you don’t see all that often, while ditching the neverending descriptions of how paprika tastes pretty good in favor of richer characters and classic Moffat/Gatiss “I’m-smarter-than-you” monologues from the Count. The makeup is horrific, like it should be, and the series beats Last Voyage of the Demeter to the punch by a couple of years, turning the sea voyage into its own bottle episode with outstanding results.

Chucky 495xe

You know, people give a lot of guff to late-stage capitalism for the way that it’s going to kill us all, but it does some good things, too. If it weren’t for interstudio anatomically-correct-doll-measuring contest over the rights to the Child’s Play franchise, we might never have gotten Chucky, the USA/Syfy revival of Charles Lee Ray’s family of collectible toy slaughter enthusiasts.

Chucky really shines when it abandons the borderline-SEO narratives about a Stranger Things-adjacent group of friends and their Euphoria-adjacent problems. Once you get down to the Jennifer Tilley and doll disfigurement of it all, the three-season series is camp excellence.

Hannibal 5a5054

If you haven’t watched Hannibal by now, maybe it isn’t for you. It’s a bold series, highly stylized with the sort of troublingly precise artistic ultraviolence that usually sees you getting kicked out of a paint-’n’-sip night, not running your own network TV show.

10 years after it premiered, this adaptation of the work of Thomas Harris remains unique. It’s like if someone poured body chocolate on CSI. The set dressing, cinematography, soundtrack, and prop work put into every dinner scene will delight the foodie in you, then make the foodie in you shake its head, wonder what’s wrong with it, and drink wine and stare at itself in the mirror for a minute, unsure how to feel, before starting another episode of Hannibal.

Ash vs Evil Dead 645335

It’s a well-established truism in the world of design that a thing is not perfect when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. The setup for Ash vs Evil Dead is so simple, so elegant, so head-bangingly stupid, it may just be the ideal to which all other horror television must aspire. The show features all the Bruce Campbell you could reasonably ask for, a ing cast of fantastic characters, a perfectly balanced ecosystem of story and gorey, and a soundtrack that’ll have you space truckin’ through the gates of Hell.

Three seasons, 10 episodes per season, 30 minutes per episode. All told, you’re looking at 15 hours to watch the whole thing ⏤ less if you bounce around the time that the network canned the original showrunner in season two and everything got a little less “colon monster attack”-y.

Don’t Watch This 2t6n5z

There are, in total, 25 minutes of Don’t Watch This in existence. The 2018 Netflix horror anthology released five experimental episodes, averaging five minutes apiece, to uniformly terrible reviews. It was a different time, back when platforms were racing to get to the top of the dogpile of short-form content in the hopes of securing the cash cow that’s made Quibi the success story it is today.

You could watch the whole series in less time than it takes to finish one episode of any other show on this list. Or, as a bonus option for the viewer on a severe time crunch, you could spend even less time if you do like it says on the tin and Don’t Watch This.

The power of another iconic role in the palm of his hand. ]]>
<![CDATA[

Sometimes the universe doesn’t give you exactly what you want, but, hey, what you end up with isn’t too bad either. Case in point, we had hoped the star of a beloved thriller series that frequently shows up on “best TV shows that were canceled too soon” lists was going to return to our screens in a Netflix revival. Instead, he’s hopping over to Disney Plus to play one of Marvel’s most legendary villains ever — namely, Spider-Man’s eight-legged antagonist, Doctor Octopus.

OK, backtracking a moment to add some much-needed context. Marvel Studios recently filed for copyright for animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which will finally explore the origins of how the MCU’s Peter Parker became a webslinging wallcrawler. A big point of interest for the show is that it’ll introduce iconic Spidey characters into this continuity for the very first time, including Harry Osborn and, yes, Otto Octavius.

hannibal-1

Thanks to the copyright information, Freshman Year‘s main cast has now been unearthed. Hudson Thames continues replacing Tom Holland as Peter, after debuting in the role in What If…?, with the rest of the voice cast including Eugene Byrd (Lonnie Lincoln), Grace Song (Nico Minoru), Kari Wahlgren (Aunt May), Zeno Robinson (Harry Osborn), and, last but not least, Hugh Dancy as Doc Ock. Dancy, of course, is most known for appearing opposite now-fellow MCU villain Mads Mikkelsen in NBC’s Hannibal.

With showrunner Bryan Fuller teasing plans for a mythical fourth season as recently as this spring, online campaigns for Netflix to resurrect Hannibal are never-ending. Despite this seeming like an easy win for the streamer, Netflix has yet to bite (pun intended) at this stage. So Dancy is free to hop over to the MCU to take over from Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus. It’ll surely be fascinating to see how he manages to make the arch-foe his own, especially as Earth-199999’s Peter already faced off against Molina’s take in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year is scheduled to swing its way onto Disney Plus in November 2024.

Hulu is where shows thrive and seasons multiply.]]>
<![CDATA[

While the streaming industry’s heavy hitters steal the headlines, Hulu has quietly amassed a library of long-running shows that will keep you glued to your couch. Prepare to bid farewell to efficiency for a few hours or even days. And, of course, Hulu isn’t restricted to just producing its own shows. It also features many popular series from the past and present.

As fans of shows like LostBuffy the Vampire Slayer, or How I Met Your Mother can attest, Hulu is the home of shows full of seasons upon seasons. So, if you’re looking for something to binge on, Hulu has many options, whether you prefer drama, comedy, horror, or a mix of all three. Pop some corn, get cozy under a blanket, and invite a friend over to indulge in a night of “just one more episode.”

American Horror Story (2011-present) 2r5w1y

American Horror Story is like a master of disguise in the world of television, constantly reinventing itself to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, lost in a twisted maze of horror and suspense season after season. Crafted by the ingenious duo of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, American Horror Story shattered the mold of conventional storytelling, boldly embracing an anthology format that gleefully flips the script with every season. Viewers are treated to a delightful concoction of fresh and captivating storylines, ranging from the spine-chilling corridors of “Murder House” to the devilish vibes of “Coven.”

American Horror Stories also delves into contemporary issues. Whether it’s via shining a light into the shadows of a mental health facility in “Asylum” or reflecting the political turmoil of the past few years in “Cult,” the series expertly incorporates real-world fears into the fabric of horror. Recurring stars Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and the unparalleled Jessica Lange give an acting lesson as they take on entirely new characters each season. The promise of an emotional brew ranging from chilling fear to wrenching empathy in each episode makes it difficult to say “no” to “just one more episode.”

The Handmaid’s Tale (2017 – present) n1628

The series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale is a terrifying plunge into a future when societal structures have been destroyed, and women are marketed as mere commodities and battle with unimaginable torment. The show takes place in the Republic of Gilead. This theocratic state has supplanted the United States, painting a bleak vision of a country where environmental catastrophes and falling population rates have prompted the introduction of strict new rules.

Elisabeth Moss delivers a stunning performance as Offred, an enslaved handmaid who bears children for the ruling class. As the audience delves into Offred’s world, they see her problems and the larger tapestry of individuals who have stories of grief, defiance, and hope to tell. Most importantly, The Handmaid’s Tale is captivating because of its unnerving connection with contemporary themes like women’s rights, dictatorial tendencies, and social complacency. It’s a wake-up call and a warning all in one, leaving viewers thinking about the series long after the credits roll.

When it comes to procedural dramas, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) is a household name thanks to its astonishing run that has kept viewers captivated for nearly two decades. The New York City setting of SVU allows an in-depth exploration of the traumatic world of sexually based crimes and their complex psychological aftereffects. The series’s bold approach to storytelling is a significant factor in its enduring popularity. Each episode expertly juggles empathy and brutal honesty as it presents complicated narratives based on current events.

SVU’s stellar ensemble cast is the show’s backbone, with Mariska Hargitay’s portrayal of Detective Olivia Benson as its rock. As a result of her unwavering commitment to victims and relentless pursuit of justice, Benson has become a symbol of perseverance and success in the face of overwhelming odds. Viewers learn about the Special Victims Unit team’s personal lives and challenges throughout the show, giving the procedural style an extra dose of depth and empathy. In a television market rife with fleeting shows, Law & Order: SVU stands out as a constant in quality and relevancy, making it a show that longtime viewers and novices alike can enjoy binge-watching.

What We Do in the Shadows (2019-present) 5t20

The vampires of modern-day Staten Island apparently have remarkably ordinary lives, and What We Do in the Shadows is a deliciously off-kilter comedy gem that dives into this shocking reality. This mockumentary-style series, created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, is a spin-off of the eponymous 2014 film, and it has carved its own niche in the comedic landscape. At its heart, the show is an odd mix of the supernatural and the hysterically ordinary. Ancient vampires face mundane problems like paying rent, resolving roommate disputes, and attending city council meetings.

This contrast is a never-ending supply of comic gold. Comedic genius abounds from the entire cast, especially Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), and energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Prosch). Their antics, blunders, and centuries-old grudges are conveyed in short episodes that are just as comical as they are endearing. In an era dominated by heavy dramas and high-octane action, this show offers a refreshing palate cleanser, making it the perfect binge-worthy escape from the humdrum of everyday life.

Breeders (2020-present) 41135q

An honest and unfiltered look at the ups and downs of parenting, Breeders provides a unique perspective on the rollercoaster of emotions that is being a parent. The show, which features Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard, debunks the myths surrounding parenthood by showcasing the inevitable weariness, frustration, and humor that come with the job. This raw, unfiltered quality is essential to its attraction. This unfiltered honesty, peppered with sharp wit, hits home with every parent who has ever struggled.

Freeman’s portrayal of a dad constantly teetering on the edge of a meltdown is both heartbreaking and relatable, capturing the essence of a modern parent struggling to reconcile the overwhelming love he feels for his children with the relentless challenges they present. However, Haggard’s persona provides a touching window into the thorny issues of parenthood, professional success, and personal development. Despite its dramatic and comedic elements, Breeders is notable as an honest, often funny, and profoundly moving tribute to the messy beauty of parenthood.

Hannibal (2013-2015) 5g3v1n

The psyche of fiction’s most infamous cannibalistic psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, is explored in Hannibal, the brainchild of the brilliant Bryan Fuller. This horror-thriller delves deeply into the complexities of the human mind, interpersonal dynamics, and the delicate border between sanity and insanity. The performance of Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter is nothing short of brilliant. He gives the character an air of frigid refinement that starkly contrasts his savagery. The series hinges on this juxtaposition, where horror and grace coexist in a hypnotic dance.

Hugh Dancy’s performance as the troubled FBI profiler Will Graham provides the ideal counterpoint to Hannibal’s cold, planned malice. Their complicated friendship is the story’s backbone, with elements of mutual curiosity, loathing, and an unexpectedly sympathetic closeness. If you enjoy cerebral, aesthetically rich storytelling, Hannibal is a binge-worthy experience that will take you on a journey through the darkest depths of the human psyche.

The X-Files (1993-2018) 52069

Chris Carter’s masterwork, The X-Files, is a compelling mix of science fiction, horror, and investigative drama that won over viewers all over the world and became an instant classic. The series is set against the vast backdrop of the unknown and follows FBI agents Fox Mulder (a believer) and Dana Scully (a skeptic) as they plunge into the shadowy realms of paranormal occurrences and government conspiracies. The central allure of The X-Files lies in its intricate dance between skepticism and faith, embodied brilliantly by the dynamic chemistry of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Each episode introduces a fresh mystery, a new “X-file,” ranging from alien abductions and enigmatic animals, to creepy ghostly occurrences. This episodic framework, filled with broader narrative arcs, keeps viewers fascinated by bouncing between stand-alone stories and the developing mythos of extraterrestrial truths. As Mulder’s iconic poster proclaims, “I Want to Believe,” this yearning, this quest for truth beyond the mundane realities of life, resonates deeply with audiences.

The Mindy Project (2012-2017) 4a3l4x

Through the lens of the hilariously lovable Dr. Mindy Lahiri, The Mindy Project is a vibrant and shamelessly daring dive into the world of contemporary romance, ambition, and self-discovery. The show’s creator and star, Mindy Kaling, vividly depicts the complexities and joys of living in New York City. The show’s refreshingly realistic depiction of romantic relationships and professional aspirations is one of its many strong points. It doesn’t romanticize the intersections of love, work, and development; instead, it shows how messy and frequently funny they can be.

Dr. Lahiri, a fan of chick flicks, exemplifies many contemporary women; she is ionately ambitious, constantly on the lookout for love, and frequently humorously flawed in her reaction to life’s obstacles. The show’s attractiveness stems from how she interacts with a wide cast of characters, from the moody Danny Castellano to the eccentric Morgan Tookers. Simply said, The Mindy Project is a pleasant break from the usual as it celebrates life’s imperfections, wrapped in humor.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-present) 69545r

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an adventurous, rebellious mix of dark comedy, absurdity, and a joyous lack of moral com, making it one of its generation’s most distinct shows. The comedy follows the hilariously inappropriate exploits of Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) — a bunch of friends whose egos, illusions, and pure cluelessness lead them into a host of compromising situations — amid the dimly lit, frequently raucous confines of Paddy’s Pub.

One of the show’s defining characteristics is its daring approach to taboo subjects; it delves headfirst into contentious territory, frequently with a satirical twist that is both surprising and wonderfully observant. Disdain for one another, crazy plans, and an unyielding belief in their warped logic define the group dynamic of the gang. The ensemble cast does a fantastic job bringing to life flawed, often reprehensible individuals who are charming in their continuous tendency to make the worst conceivable decisions.

Only Murders in the Building (2021- present) 740l

Only Murders in the Building is set against the grand backdrop of a historic New York City apartment complex. This humorous murder mystery, co-created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, revolves around three unusual allies: Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, portrayed to perfection by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, respectively. When a neighbor dies unexpectedly, their mutual obsession with true crime podcasts entangles them in a real-life murder investigation.

The show’s superb blend of humorous timing and the palpable tension of a murder investigation is one of its notable aspects. The combination of seasoned comedians and Selena Gomez’s youthful vitality creates a charming on-screen dynamic that delights and captivates. While paying respect to the true crime genre, Only Murders in the Building also reflects on our culture’s obsession with such shows with sarcastic remarks and lighthearted critiques.

From 'Hannibal' to appearing in a Rhianna music video, actors like Mads Mikkelsen are just built different.]]>
<![CDATA[

Actors of Laurence Olivier and Marlon Brando’s caliber are always considered classic; they were theatrically-trained professionals who took everything seriously, and produced some of the best performances that we can think of. But there can be a double-edged sword to this kind of performer — Brando was such an industry professional that he took himself over-seriously in his later years, and created a lot of behind-the-scenes drama. He may have crafted some of cinema’s ultimate roles as Stanley Kowalski and Don Corleone, but his ego seemed to overshadow his work.

Modern actors, as a whole, appear to be less neurotic and have more of a sense of humor. Or, at the very least, they seem to think that being a Hollywood actor isn’t a reason to think too highly of themselves. Contemporary thespians aspire to rack up a wide variety of credits, and have chosen the career for the joy of it. Of course, not all celebrities are created equal, but the famous actors who’ve truly earned a place in fans’ hearts tend to be the most relatable. Some fans on Reddit found that whether they are in big blockbusters or not, some actors are just a delight in interviews because of how down-to-earth they are.

Hannibal’s own Mads Mikkelsen has starred in some truly exemplary movies and TV shows, and was at the top of the list. But in addition to the iconic villains he’s portrayed in franchise films, Mikkelsen has also given some iconic interviews.

After doing an interview with GQ about his iconic roles, the actor showed his playful side, sharing anecdotes from the set of Casino Royale. And the one actor that was (ironically) terrible at poker?

“Daniel [Craig],” Mikkelsen shared. “He had no clue. He sucked.”

And after appearing as the titular character in Rihanna’s music video “B**** Better Have My Money,” the actor humbly acknowledged in a Vulture interview that he was just happy to be part of the production.

And then, of course, there is the image of him during press for Rogue One that tells 1,000 words.

Redditors were also quick to name another unpretentious star with a wide range of roles — one Cillian Murphy. The Irish actor’s first big role was as a survivor of a zombie apocalypse in a cult favorite flick that hit the nail on the head of zombie films before they became all the rage: Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later.

The film was small, but paved the way for his relationship with Christopher Nolan. The director cast Murphy as Dr. Crane in his Batman franchise, and continued to work with him for the next two decades until he finally landed a leading role for the director in Oppenheimer. But even more impressive than Murphy’s body of work is how much he leans away from the limelight. Murphy has all the worth ethic of a classic Hollywood actor, but apparently none of the ego.

inpopculturechat

Even when a part of big productions, Murphy shies away from questions about himself, and is dismissive of much of the celebrity culture of being an actor. In an exclusive interview with People, Emily Blunt revealed she teased Murphy about his trademark eyes.

“It’s like that ‘Ocean Eyes’ song by Billie Eilish. We just hum it all day,” she said. However, Murphy was quick to disagree.

“They’re not even that blue!” Murphy responded. As a truly unpretentious actor, he doesn’t put down other people’s works, and was even an advocate for the Barbenheimer trend catching the internet like wildfire. When Variety asked if he would consider playing a Ken if a sequel came about, his answer was simple.

“Sure, yeah. Let’s read the script, let’s have a conversation,” Murphy responded about playing Ken. “I can’t wait to see [Barbie]. I can’t wait to see the movie. I think it’s great for cinema to get all these great movies happening this summer.”

Some franchise actors are a little more eccentric 593a5c

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Mikkelsen and Murphy have been in the industry for a long time, and know how to play the press game. But some of their younger cohorts have a different method of addressing celebrity culture. Robert Pattinson was a familiar face in the indie scene before he landed Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. And the rest, as they say, is history. When the actor landed the role of an intense vampire, Edward Cullen, he could not be bothered with acting how the production may have wanted him to. By his ission, Pattinson can’t help himself going off the book when the center of attention, as he told Willem Dafoe in a conversation for Interview.

“I definitely do get a certain high from it. There’s a little gremlin inside of me that thinks, ‘Just say something shocking. You’re only here for a few minutes, say something terrible.’ There’s a kind of perverse glee I get from that. But I’ve given my publicist a number of heart attacks.”

Because of that, Pattinson is the gift that keeps on giving as he gives some interview moments beyond reproach. Even when promoting Twilight, he couldn’t help but give his honest opinion.

“I was convinced that Stephenie [Meyer] was convinced she was Bella and it was like a book that wasn’t supposed to be published, and you’re like reading her sort of sexual fantasy. And especially when she said it was based on a dream and it’s like ‘I had this dream about this sexy guy,’ and she goes and just writes this book about it,” Pattinson told E!, going on to conclude: “This woman is mad.”

And then there is the notorious GQ interview where the actor blew up his microwave. There is no predicting what Pattinson will say next, making him one of the most unique household names. The last person to consider himself a heartthrob, the actor seems to have the most fun.

Though not quite in the same league of having no filter, Pattinson’s Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe deserves to be in the same category. The child actor who played the titular character of J.K. Rowling’s children’s series took the opportunity to move on from the franchise. Radcliffe would go on to serious fare like the neo-Nazi film Imperium, but also plays Weird Al Yankovic in the fictionalized biopic. Throw in his characters from Guns Akimbo and The Lost City, and you have an actor who does not care what people think. Branching out appealed to Radcliffe, who had interests outside of playing The Boy Who Lived.

“I had this awareness that people expected we would do nothing after Potter — that we would fade away,” Radcliffe told GQ. “I really wanted that not to be the case, because I knew that I loved it, and I wanted to do whatever I have to do to have a career with longevity.”

Experienced actors stopped caring what people think g3g62

There are those actors who have been around the block so many times that doing press and acting is just another day at the office. As opposed to self-serious performers who only ever want to be in Oscar-nominated films, other industry professionals work for the love of acting. Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most beloved actors who is also exceptionally straightforward. He knows his worth, but he also just enjoys what he does. Jackson recalled in an interview with Vulture that he jumped at the chance to be in Snakes on a Plane because he knew what a good time it would be.

“When I got there, they were trying to change the name of it to something like Pacific Flight 121, ‘Cause we don’t want to give it away.’ I was like, ‘That’s exactly what you want to do! Hell is wrong with you? I signed up for Snakes on a Plane and I guarantee you that audiences will be way more excited about Snakes on a Plane than Pacific Flight 121.”

As per usual, he was right, and the film contains one of his most quotable lines of all time. And in the same vein, Jackson also knows what a talented actor he is. After getting his honorary Oscar after being snubbed so many times in the past for the award, Jackson had no problems with acknowledging that he deserved it.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan falls into the category of rejecting Hollywood ideals as well. He and his wife, Hilarie Burton Morgan, live on a farm in upstate New York with their children, even as the actor jokingly tells one of them: “Go away son, I hate you,” in his remote Hot Ones interview. Morgan has come a long way since bursting onto the scene. An actor who had died in roles just as much as Sean Bean, he was a name to look out for after appearing as Izzie’s dead fiance in Grey’s Anatomy. His role gained him the part of The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s The Watchmen, and his career took off from there. Morgan is never one to mince words, and makes no apologies for who he is.

And then there is one of the most kindest actors on the scene, Keanu Reeves. Starting in action picture megabits such as Speed and The Matrix, Reeves soon got a reputation for his friendly demeanor. The Independent reported all of his touching interactions with fans over the years, as well as his tireless advocacy for cancer research. Reeves is one of those actors who means what he says, and is an example of leading a selfless life.

Other actors are down to earth in a different way 2439g

In the 2010s, there had been no one bigger than Jennifer Lawrence. The youngest Oscar winner at the time, she reached heights of fame after leading The Hunger Games as unlikely rebel Katniss Everdeen. But Lawrence was also never one to bask in the limelight. Though she continues to make films, she took a decided break after concerns about overexposure. Her self-awareness is uncommon in the entertainment industry, and is even more impressive when factoring in how young she was when starting her career. Recent credits included the rated R comedy, No Hard Feelings, and the interview show, Hot Ones, where she shared her feelings on Method acting.

“I would be nervous to work with somebody who is Method,” Lawrence said. “I would have no idea how to talk to them. Do I have to be in character? That would make me nervous.” Lawrence took a page from Christian Bale’s playbook, taking only 10 seconds to get into character. The Hunger Games actor has very little concern for fame or censoring herself, like contemporary Anna Kendrick.

Like Lawrence, Kendrick wound up in the middle of a hot franchise at the start of her career. She didn’t play the lead, but is one of the shining lights of Twilight who is legitimately funny. When speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor confessed that the set wasn’t quite as magical.

“I just my Converse being completely soaked through and feeling like, you know, this is a really great group of people, and I’m sure that we would be friends in a different time, but I want to murder everyone,” Kendrick said candidly about the experience, adding as a caveat: “There was like something about it that was like, you know, like you go through like some trauma event, like people who survive like a hostage situation. You’re kind of bonded for life.” Fans respond to people they identify with, and the more outspoken actors are, the more they become embraced.

Hannibal season 4 could be a thing, but only if it finds a home xq33

There’s truly no better gift than when an A-List celebrity gets candid about a show that was canceled, possibly being brought back from the dead. This essentially occurred during an interview between Deadline and Mads Mikkelsen, where the Hannibal star insisted that the mind-blowing series could return if the show can find a new home. Basically, Mikkelsen explained that the crew is ready to pick things back up where they left off if any network or streaming service decides to snatch up the series for a season four. Somebody, anybody — please!

Two Cinderella slashers feels like horror overkill at this point 4b5g62

Just when one Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey slasher flick felt like too much, it turns out the future of two Cinderella slashers is definite overkill. While Cinderella’s Curse has been confirmed for some time now, Cinderella’s Revenge is now coming to compete right alongside. As it turns out, Cinderella has plenty of scores to settle, and it seems she’s choosing to do so by turning everything into a blood-stained slashfest. That’s the horror genre for you.

A gut-busting horror comedy is enjoying a successful RT debut 4t3826

Without a doubt, the horror genre has been consistently pumping out an assortment of fantastic content over the last several years — especially 2022 and 2023, in particular. That being said, fresh-faced horror comedy The Blackening is amongst the best out there right now, with the brand-new movie debuting with a positive 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s certainly not unheard of in the genre as of late, but it’s definitely an encouraging sign to know that the wheels of horror are still turning in a good way.

Slither back in for next Friday, gorehounds, for a brand-new weekly horror roundup.

Don't tease us like this.]]>
<![CDATA[

It’s been 8 years now since Bryan Fuller’s blood-stained thriller extravaganza Hannibal was canceled at NBC. Despite being nearly a decade ago, the burn doesn’t sting any less for die-hards who are still campaigning for the show’s return. And while all hope feels lost on most days, star Mads Mikkelsen has swooped in to deliver us a tiny glimmer of hope after speaking about the show and teasing a potential return in the future.

While chatting with Deadline on the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premiere carpet, the Danish actor insisted that while nobody is planning to wait around for 20 years for the project to return, folks would certainly be inclined to pick the series back up if a home was found for it. We’re looking at you, Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video — anybody! You can check out the interview for yourself down below:

Mikkelsen’s words are far from an official confirmation that the show is returning, but there’s no denying that his remarks have pushed forward a great amount of hope in fans that are itching to see the series make a long-awaited comeback. It wouldn’t be the first time that a return for the show was teased, with Fuller himself hinting at a potential return back in April.

We’ll definitely keep our eyes and ears peeled for further confirmation, but until we learn more of a potential return, folks can stream Hannibal on Hulu right now.

It's the return that we deserve.]]>
<![CDATA[

When Bryan Fuller’s blood-splattered thriller series Hannibal first touched down on NBC, it didn’t take long at all for the engaging show to reach a global audience. Of course, the inclusion of the series on Netflix turned out to be a major help in that department — although it bears repeating that NBC initially snatched the narrative from us way too soon. And with the recent announcement of Lockwood & Co.’s cancellation, thrill-seeking subscribers are reminding the powers that be about the possibility of a Hannibal return.

The subject matter has transformed into a hot topic over on Twitter, where fans of the enthralling series are championing for Netflix to make it available to stream again. But with the streaming giant currently so wrapped up in canceling a parade of hit fantasy series over the last few years, it’s clear Fuller’s project is still in the rearview mirror in an “out of sight, out of mind” state.

Despite its overwhelming popularity, the series was eventually canceled after three seasons — a choice that still haunts devoted fans to this day. So, with the concept of Netflix placing the show back on the platform for streaming purposes, it’s certainly fair to say that the next big thing would be for the streaming service to completely back a potential season four.

But with Netflix continuing its horrid warpath of slaughtering beloved shows, Hannibal fans probably shouldn’t hold their breath for too long and hold out for a season four. However, keeping hope alive that the show will soon return to the platform in the future feels like a strong possibility.

There are few people in the business who love a franchise more than Vin Diesel, but the self-proclaimed Tolkien of Tank Tops is going to have more free time in his schedule than he has for decades when the Fast & Furious saga finally draws to a close once the concluding two chapters are done and dusted.

After that, he’s set to finally get the ball rolling on that fourth Riddick movie he’d been hyping up for a decade without actually having anything to show for it, but there’s an even more ambitious undertaking Diesel has been talking up for even longer that seems incredibly unlikely to ever come to fruition.

Since 2002, the actor and producer has constantly been telling anyone who’d listen that he was planning to not just star, but also direct a trilogy of historical epics following the exploits of Hannibal Barca, one of the most successful and feared generals-cum-conquerors there’s ever been. One big budget trip into the past is a risky proposition as it is, but three of them? All directed by Vin Diesel? That’s something else entirely.

To be fair, the longtime Dominic Toretto was reiterating his desires for the Hannibal triptych as recently as last year, so it’s not as though he’s given up on it entirely. On the other side of the coin, is anyone going to be willing to fund such a colossal undertaking? Diesel might have starred in plenty of box office successes, but he’s also headlined a number of catastrophic bombs, too, so you might be best crossing your fingers for sequels to The Last Witch Hunter, The Pacifier, or Bloodshot instead.

<![CDATA[

No matter how much time es, fans are still clamoring for a fourth season of Hannibal, and Bryan Fuller — the series’ creator and showrunner — has their backs through and through.

In a recent interview for Nerdist, Fuller once again expressed his desire to continue with the show after NBC’s cancellation back in 2015. Three seasons were in no way what the showrunner had in mind for Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham’s story, and having to wrap it up early has clearly left the cast and crew disappointed. Nevertheless, Fuller knows exactly where he wants to take the show should Hannibal be picked up for another season, and readily gave fans a glimpse of what that would entail when the topic arose:

“There’s something about, you know, where we left Will and Hannibal at the cliff and this power, tenderness, and intimacy that they are experiencing in that moment that feels like it’s a launch pad. I don’t think we can pull back but we have to continue the trajectory and continue that level of intimate exploration between these two men and their queer love story, their queer blurring of identities. And how that would manifest in a narrative that we can track.”

hannibal-1
via NBC

Of course, Fuller has said before that Will and Hannibal’s relationship wasn’t always intended to develop the way it did, but as the show progressed, the showrunner rolled with it, giving greater depth to these two characters’ connection. Making sure they stay true to their essence is just as important, though, and Fuller considers there is a way to do that while exploring the more intimate aspects of their dynamic:

“If you didn’t like season three you probably won’t like season four but if you like the trajectory you’re going to love where it’s going spending time with it. Thinking about it, it does become more intimate and I do see pathways of expressing that intimacy in ways that I think that the Fannibal family will feel validated by and also doesn’t feel like it’s a cheat with the characters.”

These claims are everything any Hannigram shipper has ever wanted to hear, and fans’ hope for a fourth season is renewed. Just last year, a petition for a new season made the rounds online, with Bryan Fuller himself showing for it by urging fans to sign.

Unfortunately, not everyone is so positive. Hugh Dancy, who plays Will, doesn’t seem to be holding out hope for new episodes, despite how much the cast and crew would love for it to happen. For Fannibals, though, hope is the last thing to die, and it’s clear they’re going nowhere for the time being.

Successful movies that seize the zeitgeist and instantly embed themselves in popular culture are almost always guaranteed to launch a franchise, but even then, not many people could have predicted that 2001’s sequel Hannibal would serve as the launchpad for an entire shared universe based on the iconic cannibal.

Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs is a certifiable classic that became just the third film in history to complete the “Big Five” sweep at the Academy Awards by winning Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay, but it took the second installment a decade to see the light of day.

During that period, Demme and Jodie Foster dropped out to be replaced by Ridley Scott and Julianne Moore, and while Hannibal was a monster-sized hit at the box office, reviews were alarmingly tepid compared to its illustrious successor. Undeterred, MGM went nuts on expanding the property, to the extent that it’s insane to think what we ended up with.

Hopkins returned for prequel Red Dragon, but then we got another prequel in Hannibal Rising, which eventually gave way to Bryan Fuller’s beloved three-season favorite starring Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, before procedural thriller Clarice got canned after one season, a fate everyone saw coming when it was severely restricted by the rights to which characters it could actually use.

More than 20 years on from first feasting on the flesh of viewers everywhere, Hannibal has circled back around to become an on-demand sensation all over again. Per FlixPatrol, the undercooked sophomore outing is one of the top-viewed titles on the Rakuten ranks, ensuring the IP remains as recognizable as ever.
