Newsom's own words may come back to haunt him. ]]>
<![CDATA[

In a fiery post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump launched into a transphobic tirade directed at California Governor Gavin Newsom, whom he mockingly referred to as “Newscum.” b521

Trump condemned the state’s policies on transgender athletes and issued a controversial directive threatening to withhold federal funding unless California complies with federal standards, as he interprets them, regarding women’s sports.

“Large scale Federal Funding will be held back” 4i6u25

The post came in response to recent headlines involving a transgender athlete who won multiple events at a major high school track competition in California. The athlete, a trans girl who had previously competed as a male without distinction, dominated several races, qualifying for the state finals. Critics argue that her physical advantages create an uneven playing field, reigniting the nationwide debate over transgender inclusion in women’s sports.

Trump declared that “California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.’” He cited the recent athletic victory as an example of the “unfairness,” claiming that as a male the athlete was “less than average,” but “practically unbeatable” now in girls’ events. “THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS,” Trump wrote.

He then upped the ante, warning that “large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to.”

Newsom’s trans athlete comments 5o383q

Most provocatively, Trump claimed that Governor Newsom “himself said it is ‘UNFAIR,’” referencing a statement Newsom made during a recent podcast interview. Newsom told Charlie Kirk on Newsom’s podcast, “It’s an issue of fairness.”

Newsom added, “I completely agree with you on that… It’s easy to call out the unfairness of that. There’s also a humility and a grace. You know that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression and the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well.”

Newsome continued, “So both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think you know is inherent in you">Trump orders local authorities “get involved”

Despite Newsom’s nuanced position, Trump seized on the word “unfair” as an ission of fault and used it as justification to intervene directly. “I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go,” Trump said. “In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!”

Trump’s directive to “local authorities” has no binding legal power, but it reflects the increasingly aggressive posture of right-wing leaders toward transgender rights. Conservative lawmakers in multiple states have ed laws barring transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, claiming competitive imbalance and safety concerns.

LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have condemned Trump’s comments as dangerous and dehumanizing. “Trans youth deserve to play sports like any other kid,” said a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign. “Trump’s rhetoric escalates discrimination and puts real people at risk.”

As the transgender athlete prepares to compete in the California State Finals, the spotlight intensifies not just on her performance but on a political battleground that extends far beyond the track.

Newsom pushes for a statewide homeless encampment ban.]]>
<![CDATA[

California Governor Gavin Newsom has stepped up his efforts to tackle the state’s homelessness problem by once again urging cities and counties to ban homeless camps on public property. This move follows an earlier executive order that required state agencies to clear camps from state land and now encourages local governments to do the same.

The governor made this announcement at the same time as releasing $3.3 billion in Proposition 1 funding, which is set aside to create more housing and treatment options for people who are homeless or struggling with mental illness. This new funding comes on top of the $27 billion the state has already committed to fighting homelessness, per AP News.

Newsom shared a sample law for local governments to use as a guide when creating their own rules about homeless encampments. The model law suggests banning long-term camping in one spot and preventing camps that block sidewalks or walkways. However, it also says that officials must try to offer shelter options before clearing any temporary living spaces, as reported by Reuters.

The city of Los Angeles already has rules in place that ban encampments within 500 feet of schools and daycare centers and prevent camping within five feet of doorways or in ways that block wheelchair access.

The governor’s proposal has received both and criticism. Some see it as a needed step to improve public safety and take back public spaces, while homeless advocates argue that the state does not have enough ive housing or shelter space to house everyone who would be forced out of encampments. These advocates say the proposed bans ignore the real causes of homelessness, such as the lack of affordable housing and California’s high cost of living.

The legal situation around encampment bans changed after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said it is legal to ban public camping, even if there is not enough shelter available. This decision allowed 42 of California’s 482 cities and two of its 58 counties to camping bans. This trend is happening across the country, with about 160 cities and counties nationwide adopting similar rules. The Supreme Court’s ruling played a big role in shaping the governor’s plan and the model law he proposed.

On the other hand, conservative groups like the Cicero Institute are pushing for even stricter measures. They want California to laws that would let the state sue cities if they do not do enough to handle encampment problems. They argue this would make sure cities take responsibility for protecting both homeless residents and the general public. This viewpoint stresses the need for stronger enforcement and ability at the local level.

Governor Newsom’s plan to address homelessness includes multiple strategies, such as putting more money into housing and treatment programs while taking a harder stance on public encampments.

Newsom says he's flipping the script, Kinzinger says not so fast. ]]>
<![CDATA[

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a leading Democrat, hosted MAGA architect Steve Bannon on Newsom’s new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom, Wed. March 12. Meanwhile, former Illinois U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger, a Republican, wasted no time letting his feelings be known about Newsom’s choice.

Like many liberal Democrats, Newsom has used his podcast to reach across party lines with guests like right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, much like Biden istration Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and even Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders often appear on Fox News to bridge a political divide in the country which some say paved the way for President Trump’s reelection last year.

“Unforgivable and insane” 462u5e

In his post, however, Kinzinger called Newsom’s choice to engage Bannon in conversation, “Unforgivable and insane.” Kinzinger opposed Trump during his first term when Kinzinger was still in office, and endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. He decided not to run again in 2022, and since then, he’s been an outspoken critic of Trump policies.

Kinzinger’s post read, “I am in shock at the stupidity of @GavinNewsom inviting Steve Bannon on his podcast. Many of us on the right sacrificed careers to fight Bannon, and Newsom is trying to make a career and a presidential run by building him up.”

In an accompanying video, Kinzinger added, “Bannon is the author of this chaos we’re seeing right now,” in the federal government in Trump’s second term, so far. He said, “Because Newsom wants to run for president and be this healer, he brings on this nationalist. Many on the right sacrificed our careers taking these people on,” Kinzinger reiterated. “Newsom’s trying to make a career with them. This is insane,” he said.

Newsom’s wisdom in debating right-wing populists like Kirk and Bannon is debatable. Bannon and Newsom agreed on some points, and disagreed on others during their roughly hour-long conversation. “This is part of the process to unwind you from being a globalist to make you a populist nationalist. It’s a long journey,” Bannon told Newsom.

The New York Times criticized Newsom for not pushing back on Bannon over claims Trump won the 2020 election. He did, however, correct Bannon when he called Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas.”

Both expressed doubt about Elon Musk’s influence on Trump through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Trump’s second istration, and agreed they opposed tax cuts for the rich, which Trump’s policies are often criticized for ing.

Bannon was also surprisingly forthcoming with praise for Democrats like John Fetterman and California Democrat Representative Ro Khanna.

Newsom says he’s “flipping the script” 3t1u72

Newsom has already courted controversy with this Kirk conversation when he said of transgender women in sports, a hot button issue in the 2024 campaign, “I think it’s an issue of fairness,” Newsom told Kirk. “I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said.

Newsom’s second term as California governor ends next year, and he’s termed out from running again. Many speculate he will seek the White House in 2028. When announcing the podcast, Newsom said he’ll talk to people “I disagree with,” as well as “People I look up to,” including, “some of the biggest leaders and architects in the MAGA movement.”

In an X post, Newsom explained, “Republicans are flooding the zone with content, policy, and messaging — every. single. day. We can’t just sit back or ‘play dead.’ Time to flip the script.” To replicate the right’s online success, Newsom could turn to Dems like New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has a massive social media following, for inspiration instead of becoming chummy with Bannon. It remains to be seen how Newsom’s chosen strategy will pay off.

Someone just sold their soul at a discount.]]>
<![CDATA[

Actor Mel Gibson, who’s been trying to crawl his way back into Hollywood’s good graces, decided to take a break from his redemption arc to pucker up and plant a big, sloppy kiss on Donald Trump’s behind.

Gibson recently appeared on Sean Hannity’s show, lavishing praise on Trump who, in his eyes, was playing the role of the stern father figure coming to scold the mismanaged Californian authorities. “It’s like daddy arrived and he’s taking his belt off, you know?” he gushed, apparently suffering from a severe case of amnesia that made him forget he’s a grown man talking about another grown man. There are some things you just don’t say out loud, let alone on national television.

Gibson’s comments came after Trump visited California to survey the aftermath of the wildfires, which caused significant damage to parts of the Southern California region. During his visit, Trump was greeted by California Governor Gavin Newsom, whom the former president has criticized and referred to as “Newscum” in recent weeks, specifically targeting Newsom’s handling of the wildfire crisis. Regardless, Gibson’s remarks quickly gained attention on social media platforms, with many s expressing discomfort and criticism towards the actor’s choice of words.

The consensus? It’s not just weird — it’s uncomfortably weird.

But hey, why the creepy daddy praise? What’s in it for Mel? Could it be that shiny title of being one of Trump’s “special ambassadors” to Hollywood? What a treat! From outcast to insider, all it took was a little bootlicking and some good old-fashioned MAGA cheerleading.

Aligning with MAGA might raise eyebrows, considering Mel’s just dusted off his Hollywood comeback cape, after a brief hiatus spent spewing antisemitic venom during a DUI arrest, grappling with a domestic violence probe, and copping to a battering case against his ex. Really, if there’s a bad decision to be made, trust Mel to say, “Hold my beer.”

Gibson later tried to make a comeback with Hacksaw Ridge (2016) after his parade of public disasters. Instead of keeping it low-key, he not only endorsed Trump with the fervor of a born-again zealot but also threw some sexist jabs at Kamala Harris for good measure. Plus, he backed Sound of Freedom, a flick accused of fanning the flames of QAnon conspiracy theories. Hollywood might have short-term memory loss, but the rest of us aren’t equipped with such convenient amnesia. Now, instead of showing true repentance or, heaven forbid, actual personal growth, he’s hitching his wagon to Trump’s star.

The disgraced actor is not the only one suffering from a severe case of daddy issues, though. Every other day, we’re subjected to some MAGA devotee talking about Trump like he’s the father figure they never had but always wanted. “He tells it like it is!” they cry, conveniently ignoring the fact that most of what spews from his mouth is a barely coherent word salad. And oh, how they swoon when he tosses them a bone — Never mind that the bone in question is usually little more than a half-gnawed scrap of nonsense wrapped in a thick layer of racism, sexism, and general bigotry, then served with a side of corruption. If this is the kind of paternal love they’ve been missing, a few therapy sessions might be a safer bet than a rally.

Is Trump smarter than a seventh grader?]]>
<![CDATA[

The war of words between Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump amid the LA wildfires continues, with the former hitting back after the president-elect called him “Newscum.”

For context, Trump has taken aim at the California governor for his handling of the wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles County. In a Truth Social post on Jan. 9, Trump addressed Newsom as “Newscum” and said he was “the blame for” the unfolding natural disaster. He also baselessly claimed that Newsom had failed to sign a water restoration declaration, and said the fires were the result of the state’s efforts to protect a nearly-extinct species of fish called smelt.

Now, Newsom is hitting back at Trump’s nickname (which is almost as weak as “Tampon Tim”), recalling in a recent press conference how the same name was given to him in seventh grade. “Newscum,” he said, “I the guy on Baltimore Avenue who called me ‘Newscum,’ I was in seventh grade.” The governor completed his thoughts — which offered a mic drop moment so intense you can still hear it ricochetting — by assuring that he “can handle” Trump’s taunts, and elaborated in an X post that, despite Trump’s efforts to the contrary, the LA natural disaster “isn’t about me.”

“It’s about the people we represent,” Newsom wrote, “and the aid they deserve.” It marks the most recent time that Newsom has called out Trump’s attempts to distract from the urgency of the disaster by creating politicized firestorms of his own. In response to Trump’s Truth Social post earlier this month, Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, said the governor is “focused on protecting people, not playing politics, and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need.” Later, Newsom himself said “this guy wants to politicize” the wildfires while “people are literally fleeing” and have “lost their lives.”

It’s not the first time the pair have gone toe-to-toe on this issue. In 2019, during that year’s California wildfires, Trump and Newsom again exchanged words on social media, with the latter saying Trump was “excused from this conversation” since he doesn’t “believe in climate change.” Of course, for some people, both Newsom and Trump have been on the receiving end of the blame game as citizens try to make sense of the current devastation.

For his part, Newsom was called out by reality star Kim Kardashian, who urged him to increase the pay earned by incarcerated firefighters battling the blaze, despite her family’s water usage being called into question. Newsom has predictably also caught the ire of far-right citizens who have called for him to resign while in the same breath still wishing for Canada to be a part of the US

On the other end of the spectrum, Trump himself has been held responsible for the wildfires, with Two and a Half Men star Jon Cryer calling out his hypocrisy while calling to mind the 2016 wildfires in Tennessee. Meanwhile, for his part, The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden described Trump as an “orange idiot” whose response to the LA wildfires has been “outrageous” and “very damaging.”

These criticisms follow a resurfaced clip of Trump during his presidential campaign, in which he seemed to be more concerned by the cost of wildfires than the human and environmental destruction that they cause. If there’s anything worthy of the ‘scum’ label, it’s that.

Roughly 900 of the deployed firefighters are inmates.]]>
<![CDATA[

The American history books of tomorrow will be home to more than a few devastating entries. The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles — which, at the time of writing, have claimed 24 lives and have collectively stretched around 60 square miles — is one of them. Another would be the legislation of prison labor that has effectively allowed America to get away with modern-day slavery.

These two entries would likely show up in the same chapter. As previously reported, 30 percent (or roughly 900) of the firefighters being deployed against the LA fires are inmates, who earn “between $5.80 and $10.24 a day and an additional $1 per hour when responding to active emergencies.” Kim Kardashian wants that to change.

Per US Magazine, this past Saturday saw Kardashian take to her Instagram Story to commend the “heroes” who have been putting their lives on the line to combat one of the worst wildfires in the history of the United States, giving a particular nod to those that are incarcerated, and calling on California governor Gavin Newsom to raise their pay.

The incarcerated firefighters have been paid $1/hour to risk their lives and this pay has been the same since 1984. It has never been raised with inflation. It’s never been raised when fires got worse and many [firefighters] died. This year there was an agreement to raise the incarcerated firefighter pay to $5/hour, but it got shot down last minute. I am urging @cagovernor to do what no Governor has done in 4 decades, and raise the incarcerated firefighters pay to a rate that honors a human being risking their life to save our lives and homes.

Kardashian, primarily known for her presence in the reality television scene, is no stranger to criminal justice matters. She previously played a crucial role in getting the First Step Act ed by Congress in December 2018, which aimed to reform laws around federal prisons and sentencing in hopes of reducing the rate of recidivism. She also funded the 90 Days to Freedom campaign, which sought to prevent nonviolent drug offenders from receiving life sentences.

Every single one of these actions is underlined by a belief that we all share on some level: a belief in our individual capacity to grow, change, and redeem ourselves. If we believe that about ourselves, as well as our friends, family, and colleagues, should we not extend that same grace to incarcerated individuals? Especially incarcerated individuals who are risking their lives to quell one of the most horrifying disasters to ever occur on American soil?

And indeed, Kardashian gave one more shoutout to the firefighters of the Ventura Training Center, which consists of formerly incarcerated firefighters who have re-entered society and are making up their sentences by protecting their communities.

Due to bills ed by @antirecidivismcoalition, these guys can now get their sentences reduced, expunging the felonies from their records for their fire service. And when they come home can get six figure jobs working for the fire departments.

Newsom would be wise to heed Kardashian’s advice and raise the pay of these individuals, if not to show up on the right side of those aforementioned history books, then to add to the sheer humanity that has impossibly bloomed out of this otherwise ghastly affair.

<![CDATA[

In the current political climate, there is an unabashed insistence, particularly from one side of the bipartisan isle, in avidly playing the blame game even during unspeakable tragedies that ought to inspire our comion and give us humanitarian priorities. As Los Angeles faces its worst wildfire crisis ever, some overzealous Republicans’ instinctual reaction is to engage in pointless finger pointing.

For instance, the soon-to-be President, Donald Trump, and his faithful goblin lackey, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, decided that all this death and destruction was the perfect time to throw stones at California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom – whom Trump dubbed “Newscum,” because this was simply the perfect timing for him to go peruse his infantile nickname arsenal.

Another point of unnecessary contention hinges on whether the Los Angeles Fire Department, under the leadership of Kristin Crowley, has failed the county’s denizens for its strategical focus on widening the demographical range of the recruits by being more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Unlike some Right-wing zealots have tried to argue, this motivation does not mean qualified straight, white, cisgender men were turned away from positions they could have filled for prejudice against their identity. True to themselves, this select group of ungracious Republicans refuse to see the vaster nuances of an intricate problem when those do not befit their preferred narratives.
