A fifteen-year-old mystery surrounding the disappearance of Izabela Helena Zablocka has taken a dark turn with the discovery of human remains and the arrest of four people suspected of murder.
The remains were found during a search of a property on Princes Street in the Normanton area of Derby, leading Derbyshire Police to start a full murder investigation. While the remains have not yet been formally identified, police believe they belong to Ms. Zablocka, a Polish citizen who had been living in Derby since 2009 before she vanished without a trace in August 2010.
The breakthrough in the case came after Ms. Zablocka’s family in Poland recently filed a missing person report. Despite their efforts to find her over the past fifteen years, all previous attempts to locate her had failed. This led Derbyshire Police to begin a detailed investigation, which included a search of the Princes Street property, according to BBC.
It was in the garden of this house that the human remains were discovered, prompting the police to immediately launch a murder inquiry. Four people have been arrested in connection with the case. Three suspects, two women aged 39 and 43, and a 41-year-old man, were taken into custody earlier in the investigation and remain on bail while inquiries continue. A fourth suspect, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested over the weekend and later re-arrested as the investigation developed. All four are being held on suspicion of murder.
More evidence uncovered from grizzly murder
Detective Inspector Kane Martin, who is leading the investigation that could have been a cold case, expressed the police force’s deep concern for Ms. Zablocka’s family. “Izabela’s family are our main priority following this discovery,” he said in a press release. “Although formal identification has not yet been done, we believe these remains are Izabela’s. We have spoken with her family in Poland, and they are aware of the situation.
DI Martin acknowledged that the formal identification process would take time but assured the public that updates would be provided as soon as possible.
The discovery has shocked the local community, and DI Martin addressed residents’ concerns, promising that police would remain in the Princes Street area in the coming days. He also directly asked the public for help, urging anyone with information, no matter how small it might seem, to come forward.
“Izabela had friends in Derby, spent time socializing in Derby, and worked in Derby,” DI Martin explained. “We know that someone out there has information about Izabela that could help us understand what happened to her. We urge anyone who saw her, spoke to her, or heard anything about her in July or August 2010 to come forward. You might have the key piece of information we need to fully understand the circumstances of Izabela’s disappearance and to give her family the answers they deserve about what happened to their loved one.”
There are other terrible crimes, but this one hurts just as much. To encourage people to share information, the independent charity Crimestoppers is offering a reward of 20,000 GBP (approximately $25,000) for any information that leads to the conviction of those responsible. This reward highlights the seriousness of the investigation and the authorities’ determination to bring those involved to justice.
