“How many times have you fallen in love?” whispers the soft-spoken, delightfully innocent Therese Belivet in the moving new trailer for Todd Haynes’ Carol, which stars Rooney Mara and the Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett as a pair of mismatched women living out their lives in a post-war New York City.
Crossing paths by chance, Mara and Blanchett’s characters are from two vastly different social brackets, though such minor details and social stigma can’t prevent the pair from falling madly in love. It’s Blanchett’s titular, affluent woman who is stuck in a loveless marriage with Kyle Chandler’s do-gooder, and their relationship soon falls apart at the seams when he learns the truth.
Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s acclaimed novel The Price of Salt, Haynes’ latest is emerging as one of the frontrunners for this year’s race for Oscar. Boasting two talented actresses – and no doubt two compelling performances – along with themes of social liberation and the personal epiphanies of Carol and Therese, Haynes’ drama is already primed to be an awards favorite, and we have every confidence that the director will handle this imioned love affair in a delicate, cinematic fashion.
Carol will premiere first in the States on November 20, before making its way across the pond for release in the UK on November 27.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light.
