Ubisoft has thrown a curveball with the latest trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Unity, which showcases a segment from the anticipated sequel situated within World War II replete with machine guns and zeppelins.

We say curveball because, up until now, the studio has hammered home the point that the latest entry into the franchise will allow players to explore the rich history of the French revolution as Arno Dorian. But according to the trailer, an unstable and sporadic simulation means that our protagonist will find himself thrust into an alternate timeline on occasion — but landing in the midst of WWII, I mean, come on, that’s just bad luck.

Either way, the mysterious segment will still take place in Paris and as you can see in the above trailer, will have you scaling the Eiffel Tower itself whilst trying to avoid the spotlights from overhead zeppelins.

Ultimately, it’s a glitch in the Animus that causes the time anomaly, as the voiceover from the clip describes.

“Assassin, watch out,” a voice-over states, “the French Revolution simulation is collapsing. I don’t know what time period you’ll end up in.”

While it is a surprising reveal to make so close to release, this isn’t the first Assassin’s Creed that has featured more than one setting. In fact, many of the previous titles in the series have characters such as Desmond Miles explore a modern day environment in order to piece together the fragmented narrative.

How exactly the World War II segment in Assassin’s Creed: Unity filters into the core game remains to be seen. But we’ll be sure to keep you right up to date with all the news pertaining to Ubisoft’s current-gen release as it appears.
